Bogatyr Garlic (lb)
Purple Stripe Hardneck Garlic
Description
Bogatyr seed garlic originated in Moscow and reached wider grower networks through the Gatersleben seed bank in Germany before commercial release around 1989. Its name evokes the legendary strong warriors of Russian epic tradition, an apt match for its forceful raw heat. This Purple Stripe hardneck offers richly marbled cloves, edible scapes, cold-winter character, and bold kitchen presence.

Bogatyr lives up to its warrior name with bold color and formidable raw heat. Open the pale bulbs to find 6–8 cloves marked in shades of brown, red, and purple, then taste carefully—this is garlic for cooks who enjoy real intensity. The scapes offer a gentler early harvest, and the Moscow-to-Gatersleben preservation story adds interest for collectors. Grow it as the fiery benchmark in a home garlic tasting.
This garlic is known for intense heat when raw. Use it sparingly in salsa, pesto, dressings, ferments, and other preparations where a powerful bite is welcome. Roasting and slow cooking soften the edge while leaving full-bodied garlic flavor for soups, stews, potatoes, meats, and spreads. Tender scapes offer a greener, gentler garlic note and can be grilled, sautéed, pickled, or blended.
When growing Bogatyr, give this Russian hardneck a sunny fall planting and the dependable cold it prefers. Keep the bed draining freely through winter, then provide steady moisture as vigorous spring growth begins. Harvest the curled scapes for a milder kitchen treat. Around mid-summer, wait for several lower leaves to brown before lifting the bulbs, then cure them in shade with enough air space to preserve their dramatic wrappers.

What We Guarantee
Our only guarantee is that the seed garlic we sell will germinate, provided you follow the steps listed in our Garlic Planting & Growing Guide. This guarantee is only available to customers who purchase their seed garlic directly from us.
What We Cannot Guarantee
We cannot guarantee that your garlic will remain alive & healthy, or sizes up properly, as there are too many variables beyond our control to be able to do so (i.e. soil preparation, fertilization, weed and pest control, temperature control, irrigation, etc).

Large quality bulbs got 52 cloves per bulb to plant. Highly recommended
I was extremely happy with the variety of offerings as far as garlic is concerned. Even better, the MRS was floored looking at the size of garlic. It's all in the ground already. I have to commend you for the speed with which garlic arrived in MA, even though, it went by the slow mail. The only gripe: the free shallots promised due to my large purchase... was missing.
This is a new grow for me and the bulb size is legit! I'm excited for this one!
Delicious! I love the color of the bulbs too
This is my first time ordering from this website, my first complaint is I almost didn’t get my garlic in time to plant due to being out of stock and didn’t realize you need to place your order real early why? The garlic I received was rotted on a few cloves it wasn’t worth calling and complaining and maybe waiting a few more months for an order.. on a positive note the garlic was big and the cloves where Huge so the ones I could save and use, I’ll wait and see what will come from it..I not sure if I will order again
