Crotalaria Juncea Sunn Hemp - Raw Seed (lb)
Excellent Summer Nitrogen Fixer
Description
Crotalaria juncea ‘CIAT’ sunn hemp is a vigorous tropical annual legume grown as a warm-season cover crop for rapid biomass, soil protection, and nitrogen fixation. Its upright growth and deep taproot perform especially well during the hottest part of summer, and plants may begin flowering about 60–75 days after planting when conditions are favorable.
Sow after frost danger has passed into warm soil—approximately 65°F or warmer—and choose a well-drained site. Sunn hemp tolerates relatively low fertility and acidic soil, but it does not tolerate saturated conditions. For a cover-crop stand, drill or broadcast seed evenly and avoid overly wide rows that leave soil exposed. Terminate before mature seed develops and before stems become excessively fibrous if easy incorporation is the goal.
- Application rate: 15–30 lb per acre
- Inoculant: This is raw, uncoated seed. Inoculate before planting with Cowpea, Peanut & Lespedeza Inoculant to support effective nodulation and nitrogen fixation.
- Germination: Approximately 5–10 days in warm, moist soil
- Plant height: Approximately 5–6 feet
- Primary uses: Biomass, green manure, soil cover, summer weed competition, and crop rotation
- Additional notes: Heat loving; damaged by frost; reported resistance to some root-knot and reniform nematodes can vary with pest population and growing conditions.
Minimum order quantity is 50 pounds.

I planted this to reduce erosion and work as a ground cover and template for fall/winter cover crops. I chopped it down once it got to around 5-6 ft and let our first freeze kill it out... it's now december and I have amazing volunteer germination of annual grasses that sprouted under the canopy of this a little before it was winter killed with little weed pressure. This soil shall be most favorable in spring when I plan to actually crop it out. (central texas has little to no soil so i've had to essentially start from scratch and this has really helped)

We love sunn hemp because it is a warm weather planted cover crop that grows fast, produces big biomass, and fixes nitrogen. Not other crop really fits the bill for us in that manner. Not the easiest seed to find, we appreciate PV carrying this at a reasonable price.
I was using cowpeas for a summer cover crop, and they didn't germinate consistently, so I replaced them with this sunn hemp. In about a week, all my beds are popping up in new crotolaria, so I'm very happy so far.
lots of seeds in order, germinated well. Good for goat forage. My goats have cleaned my pasture of all the nasty things they like to eat and are not happy eating grass and clover. This will help repopulate my pasture with forage. I am growing a patch that they cannot get to for seed and seeding the rest as I rotate pasture.
