Description

Black Jack fig is a naturally smaller fig similar to Mission, with purple skin and sweet pink-to-red flesh. Its manageable habit makes it a useful choice for a large container or a garden where regular pruning will keep the tree within reach.

Product Details

  • Plant form: Potted, own-root deciduous fig tree
  • Tree habit: Semi-dwarf; can be maintained smaller with pruning and container culture
  • USDA zones: Listed for Zones 7–10; winter survival and dieback depend on microclimate and protection
  • Harvest: Mainly late summer into fall; exact timing and crop size vary by climate and pruning
  • Fruit: Purple-skinned figs with sweet pink-to-red flesh for fresh eating or preserving
  • Pollination: Common-type fig; a second tree or fig-wasp pollination is not required
  • Site: Full sun and well-drained soil; use a large, free-draining container if pot-grown

Seasonal note: This deciduous tree may arrive dormant and leafless. Inspect it promptly and contact Customer Service within three days if it arrives damaged or in poor condition.

Container and canopy management

Black Jack’s smaller habit is useful where a full-size fig would be difficult to manage, but the tree still needs room for healthy roots and fruiting wood. In a container, step up pot size gradually, maintain an open drainage hole, and irrigate the complete root ball rather than wetting only the surface. Prune for a low, accessible framework and thin crossing growth. Harvest when the purple fruit is soft and droops from the stem. Container volume, pruning, summer heat, and watering frequency all influence crop size and timing.

Guarantee

We guarantee the perishable items we sell to be in good, viable condition when we sell them. Perishable items include, but are not limited to, garlic bulbs, flower bulbs, seed potatoes, onion sets & transplants, potted or bare root trees, vegetable crowns, etc. If your perishable item arrives in substandard condition, take photographs and please contact us within 3 days of the purchase date (or delivery date) and we will provide you with a refund of the purchase price (excluding shipping costs), or a replacement. Accordingly, we urge you to open any boxes marked as ""Perishable"" immediately upon receiving them and inspect the shipment thoroughly (do not crack open heads of garlic, we do not accept claims on cracked garlic). Because some perishable items can deteriorate very quickly, we cannot accept any claims beyond the 3-day time frame as it becomes too difficult to determine if these items were delivered in substandard condition, or if they turned into such substandard condition because of having been improperly cared for or stored once delivered.
