Planting & Care

Soil and Water: Legumes like well-drained soil rich in organic matter and a moderate amount of nutrients. Water lightly at planting, medium at flowering, and heavily throughout harvest time. Avoid overhead watering which can promote disease.

Planting and Growing: Direct sow once the soils have reached at least 65°F, after the last frost. For continuous production, make successive plantings every 2 weeks through mid-summer. Beans can be inoculated to increase yields.

Harvesting and Storage: Can be harvested as fresh shelling or allowed to dry. If picking for fresh beans, allow the pod to develop with plump beans. For drying, when most of the leaves have fallen and the pods are dry, pull up the plants, making sure to gather before wet weather sets in.
