Description

Organic English Thyme is a certified organic, open-pollinated perennial herb that forms a low mound of small, strongly aromatic leaves. Its savory flavor complements soups, sauces, roasted vegetables, poultry, fish, stuffing, and herb blends, while pink-to-lavender flowers add color along paths, in containers, or near the front of a sunny herb border.

English Thyme is listed for USDA Zones 5–9 and grows in full sun or part sun. Choose a site with excellent drainage, especially through winter, because the crown performs poorly in soil that stays saturated. This herb does not require fruit-tree chill hours or a companion pollinizer. Compare winter conditions with the USDA Growing Zone lookup.

Set the potted start at its existing soil level and water thoroughly after transplanting. During establishment, check the root zone rather than relying on a fixed schedule. Once established, thyme handles moderate dryness better than continuous moisture. In a container, use drainage holes and avoid leaving the pot in standing water. Trim lightly to encourage branching, but do not cut deeply into old, leafless stems.

Harvest flexible stem tips before or during early bloom, leaving green growth behind for recovery. Small leaves can be stripped fresh or dried on the stem, then stored only after they are fully dry. Flowering stems may be left for garden visitors or clipped for culinary use after correct identification. Inspect for mites, aphids, and crown decline, particularly in humid or crowded sites. Review the small-plant transplant guide for installation and the herb harvest and preservation guide for seasonal cutting. This page is limited to cultivation and culinary use.

Planting & Care

Soil & Water: Thyme can grow in most soils, but performs best in well-drained soil with moderate nutrients. Soil which is too rich will cause the plant to get leggy and lose its compact shape.

Planting & Growing: Plant starts in late spring or early summer, once the soil has warmed up to at least 60°F (21°C).  Space plants 2 feet apart.

Harvesting & Storage: Harvest leaves when the plant is large enough. Use fresh leaves, or dry and store leaves in an airtight container. Thyme also keeps well frozen.

Guarantee

We guarantee the perishable items we sell to be in good, viable condition when we sell them. Perishable items include, but are not limited to, garlic bulbs, flower bulbs, seed potatoes, onion sets & transplants, potted or bare root trees, vegetable crowns, etc. If your perishable item arrives in substandard condition, take photographs and please contact us within 3 days of the purchase date (or delivery date) and we will provide you with a refund of the purchase price (excluding shipping costs), or a replacement. Accordingly, we urge you to open any boxes marked as ""Perishable"" immediately upon receiving them and inspect the shipment thoroughly (do not crack open heads of garlic, we do not accept claims on cracked garlic). Because some perishable items can deteriorate very quickly, we cannot accept any claims beyond the 3-day time frame as it becomes too difficult to determine if these items were delivered in substandard condition, or if they turned into such substandard condition because of having been improperly cared for or stored once delivered.
