Did You Know?

Young sunflower plants exhibit a behavior called “heliotropism,” turning their heads to follow the sun from east to west during the day. This helps them maximize light absorption for stronger growth. As the plants mature, the flower heads typically fix themselves facing east—warming more quickly in the morning and making their nectar even more appealing to pollinators.

Planting & Care

Soil and Water

Sunflowers thrive in full sun and well-drained, moderately fertile soil. Too much nitrogen leads to lush foliage but fewer blooms, so aim for balanced fertility by incorporating finished compost before planting. Water deeply to encourage strong root systems, then allow the soil surface to dry slightly between irrigations. While sunflowers are fairly drought-tolerant once established, consistent moisture supports larger, healthier blooms. Avoid overly wet soils, which can weaken stems and invite root problems.

Planting & Growing

Direct sow seeds outdoors after all danger of frost has passed and the soil has warmed. Plant seeds 1" deep. Space tall varieties 18–24" apart and compact varieties 12–18" apart, with rows spaced 2–3 feet apart. For continuous color, sow in succession every 2–3 weeks through midsummer. Keep young seedlings weed-free and consider staking extra-tall plants in windy locations. A light midseason dose of compost helps sustain bloom production without encouraging excessive leafy growth.

Harvesting & Storage

For cut flowers, harvest early in the morning when the petals are just beginning to open and pollen has not yet begun to shed. Strip lower leaves and place stems in clean water immediately for longest vase life. For seed harvesting, allow the heads to remain on the plant until the backs turn yellow-brown and seeds are full and firm. Cut the heads with a short stem, hang them to dry in a well-ventilated area, and rub out the seeds once fully dry. Store seeds in an airtight container in a cool, dark location—or leave the dried heads whole to offer as a natural treat for backyard birds.
