Description

Picual olive

Picual is a widely planted Spanish oil cultivar with vigorous growth and an open, spreading canopy. The medium-size fruit is elliptical with a pointed tip. Harvest maturity, crop size, and oil characteristics vary with site, weather, water, crop load, and processing.

Plant in full sun and well-drained soil. Give this vigorous tree adequate growing space, or plan regular pruning if it will be maintained at a smaller size.

Pollination and harvest

Picual can set fruit alone in some conditions, but a compatible cultivar such as Frantoio or Leccino may improve fruit set when bloom overlaps. Pollination and harvest timing remain climate- and site-dependent.

Planting and care

Choose a full-sun site with excellent drainage. Dig a hole no deeper than the root ball and wider than the container. Set the tree at the same soil level it had in the pot, backfill with native soil, and water thoroughly. Keep the root zone evenly moist during establishment without leaving it waterlogged.

Prune lightly to develop a balanced canopy and remove dead, damaged, or crossing growth. Mature size, flowering, harvest timing, and crop size vary with climate, tree age, pruning, pollination, water, and care. Container-grown trees require more frequent irrigation and periodic root and canopy management.

Olives are bitter directly from the tree and must be cured before eating. See our olive growing guide, shop olive trees, or browse all potted fruit trees.

Its vigorous, spreading canopy makes early decisions about permanent spacing and long-term pruning especially useful in a smaller orchard.

Guarantee

We guarantee the perishable items we sell to be in good, viable condition when we sell them. Perishable items include, but are not limited to, garlic bulbs, flower bulbs, seed potatoes, onion sets & transplants, potted or bare root trees, vegetable crowns, etc. If your perishable item arrives in substandard condition, take photographs and please contact us within 3 days of the purchase date (or delivery date) and we will provide you with a refund of the purchase price (excluding shipping costs), or a replacement. Accordingly, we urge you to open any boxes marked as ""Perishable"" immediately upon receiving them and inspect the shipment thoroughly (do not crack open heads of garlic, we do not accept claims on cracked garlic). Because some perishable items can deteriorate very quickly, we cannot accept any claims beyond the 3-day time frame as it becomes too difficult to determine if these items were delivered in substandard condition, or if they turned into such substandard condition because of having been improperly cared for or stored once delivered.
