Chives Seeds (Organic)

Chives Seeds (Organic)

Delicate onion flavor, easy to grow.

Chives are a versatile and hardy perennial herb, treasured for their delicate onion flavor and ease of cultivation. The slender, hollow green leaves are perfect for garnishing soups, salads, baked potatoes, and omelets, adding a subtle oniony touch to a variety of dishes. Thriving in full sun and well-draining soil, chives are low-maintenance and a great choice for beginners and experienced gardeners alike. They grow in clumps, reaching about 12-18 inches tall, and can be planted in garden beds, borders, or containers. In early summer, chives produce round, lavender-colored blooms that are not only edible but also attract pollinators like bees and butterflies. To maintain a continuous harvest, trim leaves regularly, which encourages fresh, flavorful growth. Chives are also a great companion plant, helping to deter pests from neighboring crops. With their culinary versatility, ornamental flowers, and pest-repelling properties, chives are a staple for any herb garden.

Chives - Common - Allium schoenoprasum

Hardy Perennial The thin, round leaves of chives are commonly used in soups and sauces. The plant grows in clumps up to 12" high and produces lavender flowers in midsummer. Chives are useful as a companion plant throughout the garden.

Planting & Care

Soil & Water: Chives like loose, well-drained soil rich in organic matter. Water evenly and moderately while establishing.

Planting & Growing: Start 4-6 weeks before the last frost or sow directly once soils have reached 55F. Chives grow slowly and usually need about a year of growth before they can be routinely harvested. They can be potted and moved indoors to provide a fresh supply for cooking all year.

Harvesting & Storage: Snip leaves when large enough to use. The flowers are also edible and have a mild oniony flavor. Harvest flowers before they open completely to avoid reseeding tendencies.
