Clear competing vegetation, loosen the surface, and distribute seed as evenly as possible across the measured area. Lightly press seed into contact with the soil rather than burying it deeply. Since seedlings will not look identical, avoid removing unfamiliar sprouts until you can distinguish them from weeds. As taller plants develop, they may shade shorter components, so the final pattern will be informal rather than evenly layered.

Seed proportions, emergence, bloom sequence, mature height, and the number of components visible will vary with the portion sown, site preparation, weather, moisture, and competition. Every listed species may not appear in a small planting. Some components may bloom in the first season, while biennial or perennial plants can follow a different schedule. Evaluate the mix over time instead of expecting all species to flower together. Leave room around paths and bed edges for the tallest listed plants.
