Salad Leaf Basil Seeds
Large Leaf Basil for Salads
Salad leaf basil is a tender, flavorful variety of Ocimum basilicum with broad, crinkled leaves perfect for fresh eating. This exclusive strain, often called “lettuce leaf basil,” produces large, 4-inch leaves with a mild, buttery flavor and sweet fragrance—ideal for culinary uses where a softer basil note is desired.
The lush, textured leaves are especially well-suited for raw preparations. Use them as a flavorful salad green, in place of lettuce on sandwiches, or as edible wraps for fresh appetizers. Their ruffled surface holds dressing and sauces beautifully, adding both aroma and structure to any dish. Try layering them with cheeses, cured meats, or garden vegetables for light, fresh hors d'oeuvres.
Plants grow 12 to 18 inches tall and thrive in full sun with well-drained, fertile soil. Direct sow after the danger of frost has passed, or start indoors and transplant into beds or containers. For best flavor and continuous harvest, pinch back regularly to encourage bushy growth and prevent flowering.

Planting & Care
Planting & Care
Soil & Water: Soil should be well worked, fertile and in full sun. Do not plant outside until temperatures are consistently above 50 degrees. Allow soil to dry between waterings and feed regularly with high nitrogen fertilizer after harvesting to promote new growth.
Planting & Growing: Sow seeds 1 inch apart, 1/4 inch deep and firm soil over. Keep bed most. Thin or transplant after seedlings are well established. To start indoors, sow 1-2 inches apart in a container of seed starting mix. Keep warm and evenly moist and provide a good light source. Transplant 8 inches apart when conditions outside are appropriate.
Harvesting & Storage: Harvest sprays of leaves by snipping stems just above 2 new sprouting leaves to encourage lush foliage. Keep flower buds snipped off. Use fresh, dried or freeze. Flowers are also edible.
