Planting & Care

Soil & Water: Celery requires rich, loamy soil and heavy, consistent water and patience. Incorporate lots of organic matter into the soil to help hold moisture. Avoid overhead watering which can collect between the stalks and promote disease and pest problems.

Planting & Growing: Start seeds indoors 10 weeks before the last frost and transplant only after day temperatures stay consistently above 55°F. Seed directly when the soil has reached at least 60°F. To enjoy celery all winter, transplant a few plants into large pots and overwinter them in a cool place, watering as needed.

Harvesting & Storage: Harvest stalks from the outside of the plants whenever they are large enough, or you can harvest the entire plant by cutting them at the soil line. For best flavor and longest storage, water the plants the day before harvest.
