Timothy Grass Seed (Lb)
Cool-Weather Pasture Bunchgrass
Timothy Grass (Phleum pratense), commonly known as Timothy Phleum, is a cool-season perennial grass that excels in pasture, hay production, and erosion control. This short-lived perennial grass is especially favored for cattle and horses, offering high fiber, digestibility, and winter hardiness.
Key Benefits:
-
High-Quality Forage: Produces nutrient-rich leaf blades and sweet seed heads, making it a preferred hay choice for livestock.
-
Cold-Tolerant & Hardy: Thrives in northern regions and endures harsh winters.
-
Deep-Rooted for Soil Health: Its fibrous root system helps prevent erosion and improves soil structure.
-
Ideal for Pastures & Hayfields: Commonly used as a pasture grass and hay crop due to its high palatability.
-
Not to Be Confused with Meadow Foxtail: Timothy Grass is sometimes mistaken for Meadow Foxtail (Alopecurus pratensis), but can be identified by its distinct flower head and stem base.
Uses of Timothy Grass:
-
Livestock Pasture & Hay: A primary forage source for cattle and horses, providing essential fiber for digestion.
-
Pet Feed: A staple in small animal diets, particularly for rabbits and guinea pigs.
-
Erosion Control & Soil Improvement: Its root system strengthens the soil and prevents land degradation.
-
Cover Cropping: Enhances soil fertility when rotated with legumes.
History & Origin:
Native to North America, Timothy Grass was introduced in the 18th century and became widely cultivated thanks to Timothy Hanson, who recognized its value for hay production. It remains a top forage choice for sustainable agriculture.
Planting & Care Guidelines:
-
Best Planting Time: Early spring or late summer for strong establishment.
-
Soil Requirements: Prefers well-drained, fertile soils with a pH of 5.5-7.5.
-
Growth Cycle: Establishes in the first year, with peak production in the second and third years.
-
Harvesting: For optimal nutrition, cut in early summer before the seed heads fully mature.

My bunnies love Timothy Hay so I decided to grow some Timothy grass in their run, The grass germinated within 7 days and after 2 weeks is about 3 inches tall. Shady coastal location in Mendocino County (9b) and weather has been sunny (65+) for many weeks. I am hoping the bunnies will eat it before I have to cut it.
Great for the PNW. Planted in September and took off quickly.
Can this grass grow way down gulf coast of Texas? I have researched and it didn't specify.
Growing food for the rabbits
I don't have a pasture to grow this in, but instead growing it in flats for the guinea pig to romp around on.....so far so good.
