The book works as a season-long reference for bed preparation, crop selection, spacing, watering, succession, and harvest. Its recommendations should be adjusted to local frost dates, summer heat, soil texture, and available growing space. Use current seed-packet directions for each variety and rely on a soil test before making major pH or nutrient changes. Garden records will help refine the plan in later years.

Receive my organic, bare root strawberries in Jan-Feb & we had an early spring in my zone 8b, so those neautis were planted & growing strong! With good care during the winter, looking forward to yummy organic berries! Wish I could stop what's coming down from the skies..just the same, as organic as can be!
We've decided to put in raised beds this year. The beds will allow us finally grow most of our own produce. But where to begin? Edward C. Smith has answers to all of my questions! I've already used what I've learned to order my seeds, and I'm anticipating frost out so I can begin to build the beds! Thanks, Ed!
This is a fantastic book for any level of gardener. Is packed full of useful information and has great pictures.
