Description

Lotus corniculatus Warm-season perennial legume.

Birdsfoot Trefoil is a low-growing perennial legume prized for its deep taproots, heat tolerance, and drought resistance once established. It performs well in a wide range of soils, including those too poor, shallow, or low in calcium to support Red Clover or Alfalfa. This makes it a reliable choice for challenging sites where other legumes struggle. Growing 12–18" tall, it provides long-lasting cover, nitrogen fixation, and high-quality forage.

With a germination window of 5–10 days, Birdsfoot Trefoil establishes steadily and produces forage suitable for pastures and hay. It also improves soil fertility and offers strong resilience to stress, including surprising tolerance to salinity. Its adaptability makes it an excellent option for cover cropping, green manure, and livestock systems in warmer climates. Explore our full range of cover crop seeds to find additional options for your soil-building needs.

  • Application Rate: 10–18 lb/acre
  • Inoculant: No additional inoculant is needed. The legume seed is already coated with the appropriate Rhizobium bacteria to support nodulation and nitrogen fixation.
  • Germination: 5–10 Days
  • Plant Height: 12–18"
  • Uses: Cover crop, green manure, pasture, or hay
  • Facts to Note: Noted for surprising salt tolerance.

Note for certified organic growers: Nitrocoated seed is conventionally grown, non-GMO seed with no fungicide or insecticide seed treatment applied before coating. The coating contains certified organic powdered limestone, an organically approved binder, and an OMRI-approved peat-based inoculant, applied through an OMRI-approved process on a dedicated Nitrocoated-seed treatment line.
