Description
Description
Blando Brome is a self-reseeding cool-season annual for California and western sites where dependable fall return is part of the management plan. Once allowed to mature and drop seed, it can reappear with autumn rainfall, making it useful on orchard floors, vineyard rows, disturbed ground, and other areas that need recurring seasonal coverage without annual reseeding.
Bromus hordeaceus—also known by the older name Bromus mollis—establishes readily on low-fertility ground and develops an extensive root system for erosion control. It is adapted from sea level to approximately 4,000 feet in areas receiving more than about 10 inches of annual rainfall. The stand reaches roughly 2 feet and can provide cool-season forage before growth becomes mature and fibrous.
Plant in fall and decide whether natural reseeding is desirable. In a reseeding orchard or vineyard system, avoid mowing the entire stand during the critical flowering and seed-development period. Where volunteers are not wanted, mow or terminate before viable seed forms. Blando tolerates repeated mowing once an established seedbank and management pattern are in place, but it should not be introduced where its reseeding habit would interfere with restoration goals or following crops. As a grass, it does not require Rhizobium inoculant.
