Description

Peaceful Valley Bloat Resistant Irrigated Pasture Mix combines persistent cool-season grasses with legumes selected to reduce—but not eliminate—the bloat risk associated with some legume-dominant pastures. The blend includes orchardgrass, tetraploid perennial ryegrass, Tetrelite ryegrass, strawberry clover, and birdsfoot trefoil, creating a productive perennial forage stand for irrigated, well-drained sites below approximately 4,000 feet.

Birdsfoot trefoil contains condensed tannins and is generally considered non-bloating, while grasses help dilute rapidly fermentable legume forage. Even with this formulation, no pasture is completely bloat-safe. Introduce livestock gradually, avoid turning hungry animals onto lush wet forage, maintain grass in the stand, and consult a livestock or veterinary professional for a complete bloat-prevention program.

Plant in early spring or late summer into a firm, weed-free seedbed. Drill for the most uniform placement or broadcast and press seed into the soil for reliable seed-to-soil contact. Keep livestock off the field until plants are firmly rooted, then use managed rotational grazing to preserve stand density and recovery.

  • Application rate: Drill at 25 lb per acre; broadcast at 30 lb per acre
  • Inoculant: No additional inoculant is normally needed; the legume seed is Nitrocoated with compatible inoculant.
  • Plant height: Up to approximately 3½ feet, depending on management
  • Uses: Irrigated pasture for horses, sheep, cattle, and general livestock

Note for certified organic growers: Nitrocoated seed is conventionally grown, non-GMO seed with no fungicide or insecticide seed treatment applied before coating. The coating contains certified organic powdered limestone, an organically approved binder, and an OMRI-approved peat-based inoculant, applied through an OMRI-approved process on a dedicated Nitrocoated-seed treatment line.
