Organic Round Green cabbage start
Round Green cabbage is a certified-organic, live potted vegetable start for cool-season gardens. It develops dense, globe-shaped green heads with crisp leaves and a mild, lightly peppery flavor for slaws, salads, sautés, soups, braises, and fermented preparations. Starting with a transplant shortens the indoor seed-starting stage and makes final garden spacing easier to plan.
- Plant form: Live potted vegetable start in an approximately 2.75-inch pot
- Organic status: Certified organic by CCOF
- Crop type: Annual cool-season brassica
- Catalog zones: 1–9; planting dates depend on local frost and summer heat
- Estimated maturity: Approximately 80–100 days under suitable conditions
- Light: Full sun, with afternoon protection helpful where early heat is intense
- Pollination: Not relevant when cabbage is harvested for its head
Transplanting and care
Harden the start to outdoor conditions before planting if it has been protected. Set it in fertile, well-drained soil rich in organic matter, and space it with enough room for the mature head and airflow. Cabbage has a shallow root system, so provide steady moisture and avoid deep cultivation close to the stem. Mulch can moderate soil temperature and reduce moisture swings.
Use insect netting or row cover early where cabbage moths and other brassica pests are common, removing or adjusting protection if access is needed. Rotate brassicas with unrelated crops and inspect the leaf undersides regularly. Harvest when the head feels firm and dense; use a clean knife to cut at the base. Maturity varies with temperature, transplant stress, fertility, and care.
