Cereal Rye Seed (Cold Hardy) (lb)
Mobilizes Excess Nitrogen
Cereal Rye (Secale cereale) is one of the most dependable and widely planted cool-season cover crops in North America, prized for its adaptability, vigor, and exceptional soil-building qualities. This hardy annual thrives in a wide range of climates and soil types, germinating in temperatures as low as 34°F—making it one of the few cover crops that can establish late in the fall or even through winter in milder regions.
Growing up to 5–6 feet tall, Cereal Rye develops a dense fibrous root system that penetrates deeply into the soil, improving structure, reducing compaction, and capturing residual nitrogen that might otherwise leach away. Above ground, its thick canopy quickly shades out weeds and provides excellent erosion control on slopes or bare ground. Once terminated, its substantial biomass breaks down into a rich straw mulch, protecting the soil surface and moderating temperature and moisture.
Though not a nitrogen fixer itself, Cereal Rye pairs exceptionally well with legumes like hairy vetch or crimson clover. Together, these combinations balance nitrogen capture and release—rye absorbing excess nitrogen while legumes contribute fresh, plant-available forms.
To prevent nitrogen tie-up, mow or till the cover early in spring before the seed heads mature. Whether for weed suppression, erosion control, or livestock forage, Cereal Rye remains a cornerstone of sustainable, resilient farming systems.
