Description

Organic Crispino iceberg lettuce start

Crispino iceberg lettuce is a certified-organic live transplant selected for a compact head of crisp, pale-green leaves. Its mild flavor and firm texture work well in salads, sandwiches, wraps, wedges, and shredded garnishes. Crisphead lettuce requires steadier cool conditions than loose-leaf types, so thoughtful seasonal timing is important.

  • Plant form: Live potted vegetable start in an approximately 2.75-inch pot
  • Organic status: Certified organic by CCOF
  • Crop type: Open-pollinated, cool-season annual lettuce
  • Catalog zones: 4–10; use local temperatures to choose the planting window
  • Estimated maturity: Approximately 70–85 days under suitable conditions
  • Light: Full sun in mild weather; afternoon shade is useful as temperatures rise
  • Pollination: Not relevant when grown for the head

Transplanting and head formation

Harden the start gradually, then set the root ball level with the surrounding soil in a fertile, well-drained bed or roomy container. Space plants so outer leaves can expand without crowding. Keep the shallow root zone evenly moist, watering at the base where practical, and use light mulch to reduce soil splash and temperature swings.

Protect the crop from prolonged heat, which can cause bitterness, loose heads, or bolting. Check beneath leaves for slugs, snails, aphids, and chewing insects. Harvest when the head feels firm and reaches the size you want, cutting it cleanly at the base. Cool the harvested head promptly for best texture. Maturity and density vary with temperature, transplant stress, irrigation, fertility, and spacing.

Planting & Care

Soil & Water: Lettuce likes full sun except in hot summer climates where it prefers some shade, especially in the afternoon. Add plenty of compost to the soil to encourage rapid growth. Water evenly and moderately to prevent bitterness.

Harvesting & Storage: Harvest the entire plant when mature, but still young and crisp. All lettuces are at their best when picked as needed and used immediately. Head lettuce will only last a few days in the refrigerator before deteriorating.
