Japanese Millet Seed (Lb)

Echinochloa esculenta, commonly called Japanese millet, is a warm-season annual grass that establishes rapidly and produces useful summer biomass. Its quick canopy development helps cover bare soil, compete with weeds, and reduce erosion during periods when open ground would otherwise be exposed. It is a practical alternative to taller sorghum-sudangrass plantings when a somewhat shorter summer grass is preferred.

Japanese millet is particularly valuable where summer ground is moist. It tolerates wet soils better than many other warm-season cover crops and can be used in areas managed with flood irrigation. Although established plants have some drought tolerance, dependable moisture during germination and early growth supports a more uniform stand. Under suitable conditions, plants can reach approximately 4 feet and produce forage as well as organic matter.

Seed after frost danger has passed and conditions are warm enough for active growth. For green manure, mow or incorporate the stand before mature seed develops. Earlier termination produces softer residue that decomposes more readily; later growth creates more biomass but also heavier stems. Japanese millet is a grass, not a nitrogen-fixing legume, so no Rhizobium inoculant is required. If the crop will be grazed or harvested as livestock feed, use appropriate forage-management practices and evaluate nitrate risk when plants have been stressed or grown under high-fertility conditions.
