Organic Cereal Rye Seed (Cold Hardy) (lb)
Great for Quick Cover and Weed Suppression
Few cover crops match cereal rye when late planting and winter survival are the main challenges. This certified organic, cold-hardy grain can germinate in soil temperatures as low as approximately 34°F and continues protecting the ground when many other cover crops have stopped growing. It is well suited to fields, orchards, and garden beds that need dependable cool-season coverage.
During fall and spring growth, cereal rye develops a vigorous root system that captures residual nitrogen, reduces erosion, and improves competition against weeds. The tall stand can reach 5–6 feet and produce substantial straw and organic matter. Rye is often paired with hairy vetch or another winter legume: the rye supplies structure, roots, and carbon-rich residue, while the properly inoculated legume contributes biological nitrogen fixation.
Rye’s vigor makes spring management important. Do not allow the stand to become more mature than your equipment or planting schedule can comfortably handle. Mow or incorporate before mature seed forms; when relying on mowing alone, termination is generally more dependable around flowering than during early vegetative growth. Later termination produces more residue with a higher carbon-to-nitrogen ratio, which can temporarily compete with the following crop for available nitrogen. If incorporating a mature stand, allow time for decomposition before planting. Cereal rye itself is a grass and needs no inoculant.
- Crop Type: Certified organic, cold-hardy cool-season cereal grain
- Application Rate: 90–160 lb per acre
- Inoculant: Not required. This is a nonlegume cover crop and does not rely on Rhizobium bacteria for nitrogen fixation.
- Plant Height: Approximately 5–6 feet
- Cold-Soil Germination: Can germinate in soil temperatures as low as approximately 34°F
- General Planting Window: Late summer to midfall in Zones 3–7; fall to midwinter in Zones 8 and warmer
- Uses: Winter soil cover, nitrogen scavenging, weed competition, erosion control, forage, straw, and biomass production
- Management: Terminate before mature seed develops and allow incorporated residue time to decompose before the following crop
