Non-Dormant Alfalfa - Nitrocoated Seed (lb)
Good for Pasture or Hay in Mild Winter Regions
Medicago sativa Perennial legume cover crop.
Alfalfa is a widely used perennial legume cover crop and hay plant, best suited for Zones 9–11 including the low desert areas of the West, the San Joaquin Valley in California, Southern Texas, and Gulf Coast states. It grows best on fertile, well-drained soils and does not tolerate acidic conditions. With a growth height of 18–24", it establishes in 5–10 days and provides long-term soil enrichment, forage, and beneficial insect habitat.
Highly valued for its deep roots and nutrient cycling, alfalfa brings subsurface minerals to the surface while fixing up to 200 lb of nitrogen per acre when supplied with adequate phosphorus, calcium, and sulfur. It produces up to 10 tons of organic matter per acre, making it excellent for green manure and soil improvement in 3–5 year rotations. With summer irrigation, alfalfa thrives and produces the most growth in warm weather, supporting bees, livestock, and overall soil health.

Note to Certified Organic Growers from Manufacturer: Nitro-coated seed is conventionally grown seed that has had an organically accepted seed coating applied to it. The seed itself is conventionally grown, non-GMO, and untreated (no fungicides or insecticide seed treatment applied) prior to coating. The seed coat consists of certified organic powdered limestone, an organically approved binder (glue), and peat peat-based inoculant that is also OMRI-approved and organically accepted. The seed coating is applied in a OMRI-approved process in a separate treatment line that only produces Nitro-coated seeds.
