Description

Organic Beardless Barley is a fast cool-season cereal for short growing windows and demanding climates. Its ability to mature in approximately 60–80 days makes it useful when growers need substantial roots and above-ground biomass without committing ground to a long-season cover crop. The beardless grain head also distinguishes it from awned barley types.

Barley is well adapted to high elevations, cold conditions, and relatively short seasons. It establishes a fibrous root system that holds soil, captures nutrients, and supports rapid vegetative growth. Use it alone for cool-season biomass and weed competition or combine it with peas or vetch. In a mixture, barley supplies early structure and carbon-rich residue while properly inoculated legumes contribute nitrogen fixation.

Plant during the local cool-season grain window into a prepared seedbed with good seed-to-soil contact. For green manure, mow or incorporate before mature grain develops. Earlier termination produces softer residue; later termination increases biomass but can require more decomposition time before the following crop. Barley may also be managed for grazing or grain production using practices appropriate to those end uses. It is a grass and does not require Rhizobium inoculant.

  • Crop Type: Certified organic cool-season annual cereal grain
  • Application Rate: 60–90 lb per acre
  • Inoculant: Not required. This is a nonlegume cover crop and does not rely on Rhizobium bacteria for nitrogen fixation.
  • Germination: Approximately 7–10 days under suitable conditions
  • Plant Height: Approximately 4 feet
  • Days to Maturity: Approximately 60–80 days
  • Uses: Rapid biomass, organic matter production, weed competition, erosion control, nutrient capture, grazing, and grain production
  • Climate Adaptation: Suitable for high elevations, cold conditions, and short growing seasons
  • Management: Terminate before mature grain develops when used as a cover crop
