Description

Certified-organic Pearl is a Southern Highbush blueberry released by USDA-ARS for very large, high-quality fruit. Light-blue berries combine excellent firmness, good flavor, and a small dry picking scar, while the plant develops an upright-spreading form from a comparatively narrow crown. In its southeastern trial region, Pearl ripens from late May into early June; gardens in cooler areas should expect later dates.

  • Plant form: One certified-organic potted nursery blueberry
  • USDA zones: 6–9
  • Chill requirement: Approximately 450 hours
  • Harvest window: Early to midseason, depending on climate
  • Mature habit: Upright-spreading and roughly 5 feet tall with suitable management
  • Fruit qualities: Very large, light blue, firm, flavorful, and clean scarred
  • Background: Southern Highbush cultivar released by the U.S. Department of Agriculture

Pearl benefits from a different Southern Highbush cultivar flowering nearby. Certified-organic Gupton is a strong internal match: it shares Pearl’s Zones 6–9, has a comparable 500-hour chill requirement, and crops in the early-to-midseason range. Plant both where pollinating insects can travel freely between flowers, then verify local bloom overlap.

Give Pearl abundant sun and a bed tested near pH 4.5–5.5. Mix in organic matter to hold moisture while preserving drainage, then cover the surface roots with mulch rather than cultivating around them. Irrigate consistently during flowering and berry enlargement; alternating drought and saturation stresses blueberries and can reduce fruit quality. The narrow crown still needs periodic renewal, so remove weak shoots and replace aging canes gradually once the bush is established. For container culture, select an acidic medium and a pot large enough to resist rapid drying. Browse the blueberry collection and review the blueberry growing guide.

Guarantee

We guarantee the perishable items we sell to be in good, viable condition when we sell them. Perishable items include, but are not limited to, garlic bulbs, flower bulbs, seed potatoes, onion sets & transplants, potted or bare root trees, vegetable crowns, etc. If your perishable item arrives in substandard condition, take photographs and please contact us within 3 days of the purchase date (or delivery date) and we will provide you with a refund of the purchase price (excluding shipping costs), or a replacement. Accordingly, we urge you to open any boxes marked as ""Perishable"" immediately upon receiving them and inspect the shipment thoroughly (do not crack open heads of garlic, we do not accept claims on cracked garlic). Because some perishable items can deteriorate very quickly, we cannot accept any claims beyond the 3-day time frame as it becomes too difficult to determine if these items were delivered in substandard condition, or if they turned into such substandard condition because of having been improperly cared for or stored once delivered.
