Description

See our guide for more information on distinctions between Red and Crimson Clovers.

Trifolium incarnatumCool season legume cover crop. Showiest of all the clovers with bright crimson spikes on 18" plants. Often used in landscaping and erosion control for its beauty, cold and shade tolerance, and reseeding ability. Fixes 80 lb of Nitrogen per acre, and is used as a cover crop in grain rather than row crop rotations, because it matures late. Also good for pastures and can easily be overgrazed, animals love it. Tolerates a minimum temperature of 10?F. Seed in fall to a 0.25"-0.5" depth at 0.5-2 lb/1000 sq ft or 20-40 lb/acre. Raw seed requires Alfalfa-Clover inoculant.

    delighted! easy to sprout!

Wow, this crimson clover sprouted so easily in my raised beds. I sowed the seed 1/11/19 and exactly one week later, my bed is entirely green with sprouts. I am located in San Jose, CA. I can't wait for it to get taller and flower.

I scattered the seed by hand and then sprinkled soil atop and lightly pressed down on the soil with a sheet of cardboard to encourage good seed to soil contact so the seeds wouldn't dry out. We did have a lot of rain this week and it was really cloudy so that also helped ensure the seeds stayed moist for sprouting.

I am using this in newly built raised garden beds in which I plan to grow vegetables. I am hoping they will help fix nitrogen, but I realize the likelihood is low given that I chose this product as opposed to innoculated seed (which I shied away from because I want to try to be successful without things I couldn't imagine procuring from nature relatively easily on my own). Even if it doesn't help fix nitrogen, at least I think it will crowd out weeds, build up soil structure and give me something I can compost to use as future garden fertilizer.
