Trero kohlrabi thrives in rich, fertile, well-drained soil with plenty of organic matter. For the sweetest, most tender bulbs, maintain even moisture from germination through harvest. Inconsistent watering can stress plants and lead to tougher texture or slowed growth. Prepare beds by incorporating compost or aged manure before planting, and loosen the soil to encourage strong root development and steady stem enlargement.

Mulching around plants helps conserve soil moisture, suppress weeds, and moderate soil temperature during warmer periods. Aim for full sun exposure to promote rapid, uniform bulb formation. Avoid allowing the soil to dry out completely or remain soggy for long periods—both extremes can reduce quality and yield.

Planting & Growing

Direct sow Trero as soon as the soil can be worked in early spring, or again in late summer for fall harvests. Sow seeds in rows and thin to the recommended spacing once seedlings are established. Closer spacing will produce smaller, tender bulbs ideal for bunching, while wider spacing allows bulbs to reach full size. Consistent, cool temperatures support the best growth and flavor, making kohlrabi a natural fit for shoulder-season production.

Provide full sun and protect young plants from heavy weed competition early on. Quick, steady growth is key to achieving Trero's signature mild flavor and crisp texture. For ongoing harvests, consider sowing small blocks or rows every couple of weeks within your cool-season window to enjoy a continuous supply.

Harvesting & Storage

Harvest Trero when bulbs reach approximately 2.5–3" in diameter for peak tenderness and flavor. Use a sharp knife or pruners to cut the stem just above the soil line. While Trero holds better than many varieties, bulbs left too long may gradually lose some sweetness, so regular harvests are recommended. Young leaves can be harvested as needed for cooking greens, adding extra value to each planting.

For storage, trim off most of the leaves, leaving a short portion of stem. Store bulbs unwashed in a perforated bag or container in the refrigerator, where they can keep for several weeks. When you're ready to use them, simply peel the outer skin if desired and enjoy the crisp, juicy flesh raw or cooked.
