Peaceful Valley Dryland Clover & Grass Mix (lb)

Resilient Ground Cover for Dryland Plantings

Peaceful Valley Dryland Clover and Grass Mix is a simple, complementary blend designed to provide seasonal ground cover, useful biomass, and plant diversity in dryland and lower-input growing areas. Combining annual ryegrass, Blando brome, and crimson clover NCO, this mix brings together grasses and a legume with complementary growth habits to help protect bare soil, compete with weeds, and maintain living roots during the growing season.

The grass components provide dependable ground coverage and fibrous root growth. Annual ryegrass establishes readily and develops a dense root system that helps hold soil in place and contributes organic material as the stand is mowed or incorporated. Blando brome complements the ryegrass with additional cool-season growth and is well suited to plantings where seasonal rainfall rather than frequent irrigation is relied upon.

Crimson clover adds legume diversity to the blend and can form a beneficial relationship with nitrogen-fixing bacteria when properly inoculated. As the clover grows and its plant material eventually decomposes, the captured nitrogen and organic matter become part of the soil nutrient cycle. For best nodulation and nitrogen-fixing performance, inoculate the crimson clover with an appropriate clover inoculant before planting and plant promptly after treating the seed.

Use Peaceful Valley Dryland Clover and Grass Mix in orchards, vineyards, field borders, fallow areas, and other sites where maintaining seasonal vegetation and protecting exposed soil are priorities. The combination of grasses and clover creates a versatile cover that can be mowed or incorporated as green manure before mature seed develops. When managed appropriately for local rainfall and growing conditions, the mix provides a practical way to add biomass, diversify plantings, and support long-term soil stewardship.

Key Benefits

  • Provides seasonal ground cover in dryland and lower-input areas
  • Helps protect exposed soil from erosion
  • Adds organic matter and useful plant biomass
  • Combines fibrous-rooted grasses with nitrogen-fixing crimson clover
  • Helps compete with weeds and occupy otherwise bare ground
  • Supports greater plant and root diversity
  • Suitable for orchards, vineyards, field borders, fallow ground, and similar plantings
  • Inoculant: For effective nodulation and nitrogen fixation, treat the crimson clover component with Alfalfa-Clover Inoculant (treats 50 lb). For smaller plantings, Garden Combination Mix Inoculant (treats 8 lb) is also suitable. Plant promptly after inoculation.

Suggested Planting Guidance

  • Application Rate: Drill 25–35 lb per acre; broadcast 30–45 lb per acre.
  • Planting Depth: ¼–½ inch in a firm seedbed with good seed-to-soil contact.
  • Planting Season: Late summer through fall in mild-winter regions; plant in late summer or early fall where winter arrives sooner, or use an early-spring planting where fall establishment is unreliable.

These are suggested starting rates based on comparable annual-grass and crimson-clover mixtures. Adjust for seedbed, equipment, rainfall, climate, and ground-cover goals.
