Description
Description
Peaceful Valley Summer Soil & Wildlife Mix is a diverse warm-season blend created to support soil stewardship, seasonal ground cover, and wildlife habitat in a single planting. Combining buckwheat, white millet, red cowpeas, soybeans, blackeye peas, and mung beans, this mix brings together grasses, legumes, and broadleaf species with complementary growth habits. The result is a versatile planting that helps keep soil covered, maintain living roots, produce useful plant material, and add greater biological diversity to gardens, orchards, habitat areas, and small farms.
Best planted in late spring or early summer after the danger of frost has passed and soils have warmed, this mix performs best in full sun and a prepared, well-drained seedbed. Buckwheat establishes quickly and provides early canopy coverage, while millet adds upright growth and warm-season biomass. The included legumes contribute additional diversity and can form beneficial relationships with nitrogen-fixing bacteria when properly inoculated. For effective nodulation across the different legumes, treat the soybean component with Soybean Inoculant (treats 300 lb) and the cowpea, blackeye pea, mung bean, and sunn hemp components present in the blend with Cowpea, Peanut & Lespedeza Inoculant (treats 100 lb). Plant promptly after treating the seed.
Use Peaceful Valley Summer Soil & Wildlife Mix to occupy fallow ground, diversify crop rotations, support wildlife and beneficial insects, or create a multi-purpose warm-season cover crop. Mow or incorporate the planting before mature seed develops when the primary goal is green manure and soil improvement. When managed for habitat, portions of the planting may be left standing longer to provide additional structure and seasonal food resources.
