Planting & Care

Soil & Water: Corn is a heavy feeder requiring high amounts of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium (NPK). Its weak and shallow root system likes loose soil with a high compost content.

Planting & Growing: Sow seeds directly outdoors 1 week after the last frost. You can start earlier by using black or green plastic mulches and floating row covers to obtain optimum conditions. Plant in blocks rather than rows to ensure good germination. To prevent cross-pollination, plant different varieties at least 500'. Painted Mountain tolerates high winds, cold nights, and drought.

Harvesting & Storage: For sweet corn, harvest when part of the silk is brown. For dry corn, harvest when husks are completely dry. To finish the drying process, husk the ears and spread them in a dry, well-ventilated area. Store on the cob, or shuck and store kernels.

100% Germination Rate

We soaked overnight for 8 hours, and then dried with a paper towel. Some were planted immediately and others days later. All germinated within 2-3 days (90+ degree temps in full sun). Have not gotten to the point of harvesting yet to review further.

Popping out of the ground after 1 week!

I planted some Painted Mountain with my toddlers last weekend, and they're jumping out of the ground now after a week. 100% germination. We're really looking forward to watching them grow before harvest this fall!

next spring-a trial for corn meal

There's a local grist Mill nearby. I cannot eat kernel corn-only hominy , grits, meal & flour. I'm trying various types in spring and believe this will be the best! Many good reports on it, currently & historically, for much more than decorations.

excellent ornamental

Productive, drought resistant, beautiful and early, this corn did well for me two years in a row. A lot of variation in the ears, nice patterns, drys down well, some red husks and bonus... it pops too! Will grow again
