Planting & Care

Soil & Water: Lettuce likes full sun except in hot summer climates where it prefers some shade, especially in the afternoon. Add plenty of compost to the soil to encourage rapid growth. Water evenly and moderately to prevent bitterness.

Planting & Growing: Start seeds indoors 4 weeks before transplanting outside, or sow seed directly as soon as the soil is workable. Make successive plantings every 10-14 days for a continuous harvest. In mild climates, lettuce can be sown from spring through fall.

Harvesting & Storage: Begin harvesting outer leaves as soon as they are large enough and continue until a central stalk begins to form, which signals the end of the harvest period. You can also harvest the entire plant when it's mature but still young and crisp.

pretty

Love the speckled color, very ornamental in the garden. One of my favs for growing all the time and snacking on in the garden. Sometimes the weather doesn't cooperate and they bolt too quickly in the heat, but most other times it all works out fine!

Good for cool season and attractive

Planted in seed trays in December and transplanted in January. Harvesting full heads in March-April. The freckle appearance (light brown) looked a little like slug damage on very young heads, but the spots become more red as leaves get bigger. The heads were very pretty minus some minor tip burn from hot sun in late April. Very mild flavor when picked young but bolted in late April (daytime temp in 80's) and became bitter.

Cute and grows well

Cute freckled lettuce that grows well in Southern California, zone 9 or sunset 23. It\'s a nice change from the red leaf and romaine we grow.
