Black Jewel Raspberry is one live potted black raspberry selected for cold hardiness, vigorous growth, and richly flavored fruit. Its medium-to-large berries ripen black with good firmness, making them useful for fresh eating, jam, freezing, pies, and other kitchen projects. Unlike red raspberries that may spread widely by root suckers, black raspberries usually renew themselves with canes arising near the crown and by tips that root where they touch soil.
- Plant form: One potted black raspberry plant
- USDA zones: 5–8
- Chill requirement: Approximately 500–1,000 hours
- Fruiting habit: Floricane, or summer bearing
- Pollination: Self-fruitful; a dedicated pollinizer is not needed
- Harvest: Early summer, with timing influenced by region
Plant in full sun and fertile soil with excellent drainage. Black raspberries are poorly suited to persistently wet ground and can be vulnerable to root diseases, so avoid low spots and locations where tomatoes, potatoes, peppers, eggplants, or other brambles recently grew. Water the container before transplanting, keep the crown near the existing soil line, and irrigate evenly while roots establish. Mulch can conserve moisture, but keep it back from the crown and do not allow the planting area to remain soggy.
Support Black Jewel on a sturdy trellis or wire system. During early summer, pinch or tip vigorous first-year primocanes at a manageable height to encourage lateral branches; those laterals will carry the following year’s fruit. After the crop finishes, remove the spent second-year floricanes at ground level. In late winter, shorten strong lateral branches and remove weak, broken, or crowded wood. This two-stage pruning keeps the planting accessible and directs growth toward productive fruiting laterals.
Black Jewel is self-fruitful and can set a crop without another cultivar, though bee activity during bloom remains beneficial. Read the cane berry planting guide before transplanting, and explore the raspberry collection for complementary red or yellow cultivars with different harvest periods.

Cane berries prefer a deep, well-drained, fertile soil and typically bear fruit on 2-year-old wood with everbearers producing on first-year wood. They thrive in most soil types. Cane berries are versatile and hardy in the coldest climates where other fruits fail. Plant late winter to early spring. Space 2’ - 3’ in a row with 8’ - 10’ between rows.

We guarantee the perishable items we sell to be in good, viable condition when we sell them. Perishable items include, but are not limited to, garlic bulbs, flower bulbs, seed potatoes, onion sets & transplants, potted or bare root trees, vegetable crowns, etc. If your perishable item arrives in substandard condition, take photographs and please contact us within 3 days of the purchase date (or delivery date) and we will provide you with a refund of the purchase price (excluding shipping costs), or a replacement. Accordingly, we urge you to open any boxes marked as ""Perishable"" immediately upon receiving them and inspect the shipment thoroughly (do not crack open heads of garlic, we do not accept claims on cracked garlic). Because some perishable items can deteriorate very quickly, we cannot accept any claims beyond the 3-day time frame as it becomes too difficult to determine if these items were delivered in substandard condition, or if they turned into such substandard condition because of having been improperly cared for or stored once delivered.

Been in the ground for several weeks now.... Actually in a bottomless mini-raised bed/container... Happy to see numerous shoots coming up and looking forward to fresh berries!!
I would not have got these plants if it was not for the helpful person I reached on the phone. She checked the inventory and called me back. Did the transaction over the phone. Got them in good shape and very healthy plants. Planted them right away. Unfortunately we had a heatwave for 10 days and I lost some of the tender sprouts that were on the crowns. Pretty sure they’ll come back. Thank you so much! My favorite berries right here in my own backyard!
This product I highly recommend for the midwest (WI). Within 1 year these root systems spread and produced large delicious fruits. Highly recommend.
Large roots and thick established canes on these, they look great! I soaked them and got them in the ground right away, then cut back the what was there of the canes so the roots could get established--but still it was no time before shoots started coming up. Great product!
