Description

Trifolium pratense Doublecut red clover is a short-lived perennial cool-season legume selected for vigorous regrowth and multiple-cut forage systems. It also serves as a dependable cover crop for building organic matter, supporting soil nitrogen, protecting the soil surface, and providing blooms for pollinators and other beneficial insects.

Red clover is widely adapted but performs best in moderately fertile, well-drained soil with adequate calcium. Seed in fall where winters are mild or in spring in colder regions. It may be interseeded with small grains or used in rotation between cash crops. Avoid waterlogged sites, and terminate before mature seed develops if reseeding is not desired.

  • Seeding depth: ¼–½ inch
  • Application rate: ½–1 lb per 1,000 sq ft or 15–20 lb per acre
  • Inoculant: No additional inoculant is normally needed. This Nitrocoated seed includes an appropriate peat-based inoculant to support nodulation and nitrogen fixation.
  • Germination: Approximately 5–10 days
  • Plant height: About 18 inches
  • Uses: Cover crop, forage, soil-building rotation, pollinator habitat, and green manure

See our guide to the differences between red and crimson clovers.

Note for certified organic growers: Nitrocoated seed is conventionally grown, non-GMO seed with no fungicide or insecticide seed treatment applied before coating. The coating contains certified organic powdered limestone, an organically approved binder, and an OMRI-approved peat-based inoculant, applied through an OMRI-approved process on a dedicated Nitrocoated-seed treatment line.
