Description
Description
Jericho is an upright green romaine selected for warm growing conditions, with crisp leaves and a sweet, mild flavor for salads, sandwiches, and wraps. Gardeners can harvest it as young leaf lettuce or allow plants to develop more mature romaine heads. Its 28–58-day maturity range reflects those different harvest stages. This organic seed can be sown for a cool-season lettuce crop while giving growers flexibility to pick leaves at the size they prefer. Full sun to part shade and generous spacing support the tall, open romaine form.
Variety Details

- Plant type: Hardy annual
- Lettuce type: Upright green romaine
- Flavor and texture: Sweet, mild, and crisp
- Harvest options: Young leaves or more developed heads
- Packet: Approximately 500 seeds
Sowing & Growing
- Soil temperature: 45–65°F
- Planting depth: 1/4–1/2 inch
- Germination: 7–14 days
- Days to maturity: 28–58 days, depending on harvest stage
- Sun: Full sun to part shade
- Spacing after thinning: 12 inches
- Mature height: Approximately 5–7 inches
Use a fine, prepared seedbed and keep the shallow sowing zone evenly moist until seedlings emerge. If you plan to grow full romaine heads, preserve the listed spacing after thinning so each plant has room to develop. For baby-leaf use, begin harvest earlier and select clean outer leaves or cut plants at the stage you want. In warm weather, check soil moisture and plant condition regularly rather than relying on a fixed watering schedule. Record sowing and harvest dates to learn which part of the maturity range fits your season. Harvest during the cooler part of the day when possible and move leaves out of direct sun.

Planting & Care
Planting & Care
Soil & Water: Lettuce likes full sun except in hot summer climates where it prefers some afternoon shade. Add plenty of compost to the soil to encourage rapid growth. Water evenly and moderately to prevent bitterness.
Planting & Growing: Start seeds indoors 4 weeks before transplanting outside, or sow seed directly as soon as the soil is workable. Make successive plantings every 10-14 days for a continuous harvest. In mild climates, lettuce can be sown from spring through fall.
Harvesting & Storage: Harvest by cutting the whole head at the soil line. Harvest when the heads are at a good size, but while they are still young and tender.
