Subterranean Clover Mix - Nitrocoated Seed (lb)

Subterranean Clover Mix - Nitrocoated Seed (lb)

Good for Orchards and Vineyards

Trifolium subterranean Cool season legume cover crop.

Good in no-till or drip-irrigated fruits, nuts and vines because it dies back early, leaving a light mulch for weed and dust control, and reseeds heavily, re-sprouting during fall rains.

Subclovers receive their name from their habit of burrowing their seedheads into the soil. This re-seeding ability, along with low spreading growth and early maturity, makes them an ideal cover crop in dryland or drip-irrigated orchards and vineyards. These Mediterranean natives are exceptionally well suited to California's soils and climate.

  • Application Rate: 0.25"-0.5" deep at 0.5-2 lb/1000 sq ft or 20-30 lb/acre
  • Inoculant: None needed, is nitrocoated
  • Germination: 5-10 Days
  • Plant Height: 12"-18"
  • Uses: Improves soil nutrition, forage or hay, weed competition, erosion control
  • Facts to Note: Prefer acidic to neutral soils and can do well in low fertility situations, but achieve greater growth and Nitrogen fixation on soils with adequate Phosphorus, Calcium and Sulfur. Use in areas with at least 15" rainfall and an altitude below 3300'. Should be mowed or grazed once or twice in spring to reduce weed competition and make the clovers spread out.

Contains: Campeda, Losa, Antas and Denmark Subclovers.

Subterranean clover mix, featuring Rhizocoated seeds, is a versatile and valuable cover crop that offers numerous benefits to gardeners and farmers alike. This unique blend of clover species, scientifically known as Trifolium subterraneum, thrives in various climates and soil conditions, making it a valuable addition to your garden or agricultural endeavors. In this comprehensive guide, we will explore the characteristics, advantages, and applications of subterranean clover mix with a focus on its Rhizocoated variety.

Subterranean Clover Mix Basics

  • Botanical Profile: Subterranean clover, a member of the Trifolium genus, is aptly named for its growth habit. Unlike common clover varieties, which grow above the soil, subterranean clover produces its delicate leaves and flowers just below the soil's surface, a unique adaptation to grazing pressure and environmental conditions.

  • Rhizocoated Seeds: Rhizocoated seeds are coated with beneficial Rhizobium bacteria. These bacteria form symbiotic relationships with the clover's roots, enhancing nitrogen fixation capabilities. This mutualistic interaction results in increased soil fertility and plant health.

  • Appearance: Subterranean clover mix seeds are small and round, typically ranging from pale green to reddish-brown, depending on the clover species included in the mix.

Advantages of Subterranean Clover Mix

  1. Nitrogen Fixation: One of the primary benefits of subterranean clover mix is its ability to fix atmospheric nitrogen into a usable form for plants. The presence of Rhizobium bacteria on Rhizocoated seeds significantly enhances nitrogen fixation, making this cover crop an excellent choice for improving soil fertility.

  2. Weed Suppression: The dense growth habit of subterranean clover suppresses weed growth, limiting competition for resources such as sunlight, water, and nutrients. This natural weed control reduces the need for herbicides and manual weeding.

  3. Erosion Control: The thick, ground-hugging growth of subterranean clover effectively stabilizes soil, preventing erosion caused by wind and water. This feature is particularly valuable for sloping or vulnerable areas in your garden or fields.

  4. Improved Soil Structure: As subterranean clover grows, it produces a network of fine roots that help improve soil structure. These roots enhance soil aeration, drainage, and water retention, creating a healthier and more productive growing environment.

  5. Drought Tolerance: Subterranean clover is known for its resilience in drought-prone regions. Its ability to conserve soil moisture and thrive with limited water makes it an ideal choice for sustainable farming practices.

Applications of Subterranean Clover Mix

  1. Green Manure: Incorporating subterranean clover mix as a green manure crop enriches the soil with organic matter and nitrogen. Plow or till the clover into the soil before it reaches full maturity to reap these benefits.

  2. Cover Cropping: Use subterranean clover mix as a cover crop to protect bare soil between main crop plantings. This practice prevents soil erosion, suppresses weeds, and boosts soil fertility.

  3. Livestock Forage: Subterranean clover mix serves as an excellent source of forage for livestock. Its nutritious foliage is highly palatable to animals, providing them with essential nutrients.

  4. Wildlife Habitat: The low, dense growth of subterranean clover mix provides cover and food for various wildlife species, including birds and insects, promoting biodiversity in your garden or fields.

Subterranean clover mix with Rhizocoated seeds is a versatile and beneficial cover crop that offers multiple advantages for gardeners, farmers, and the environment. Its ability to fix nitrogen, suppress weeds, prevent erosion, and improve soil structure makes it a valuable addition to sustainable farming practices. Whether used as green manure, cover cropping, or livestock forage, subterranean clover mix is a valuable ally in enhancing soil fertility and promoting healthy ecosystems.

NOTE to Certified Organic Growers: All our cover crop seed is untreated, non-GMO seed. This is conventional seed, but all seeds are coated with Nitro-Coat Organic, which is an OMRI listed coating. This coating uses all organic ingredients: the proper rhizobacteria, a Calcium Carbonate coating that is naturally water absorbing to speed seed germination, and an OMRI listed organic adhesive.

Sprouted right away, good for shade

Most of our property is shady, so finding clover that would grow was difficult. We planted this in a partially shady area and it sprouted right away. No problems so far!

good germination

I am really excited about this clover and am trying it out in different areas from raised beds to in the ground. Great germination so far.

Great seeds. Very exciting.

I got tons of sprouts within a couple of days. Time will tell whether it's suited that hillside, but there is no question these are top quality seeds.

Good stuff

Planted it in a roughly tilled area with tall fescue. The clover fills in nicely between the clumps of fescue, holds up well in summer and winter.
