Subterranean Clover Mix - Nitrocoated Seed (lb)
Good for Orchards and Vineyards
Trifolium subterraneum – Cool season legume cover crop.
Subterranean clover is ideal for no-till systems, orchards, and vineyards under drip irrigation. It dies back early, leaving a light mulch for weed and dust control, while reseeding heavily and sprouting again with fall rains. Its unique habit of burying seedheads ensures persistence, making it a reliable self-reseeding cover crop in Mediterranean climates like California’s.
These low-growing clovers spread across the soil surface, provide erosion control, and improve soil nutrition through natural nitrogen fixation. Once established, they form a durable living groundcover that suppresses weeds and enhances soil fertility. Suitable for dryland and irrigated systems, they thrive in acidic to neutral soils with moderate fertility.
- Application Rate: Sow 0.25–0.5" deep at 0.5–2 lb/1,000 sq ft or 20–30 lb/acre
- Inoculant: None needed, seed is nitrocoated
- Germination: 5–10 Days
- Plant Height: 12–18"
- Uses: Soil improvement, forage or hay, weed suppression, erosion control
- Facts to Note: Best in areas with at least 15" rainfall and altitudes below 3,300'. Benefits from soils with adequate phosphorus, calcium, and sulfur. Should be grazed or mowed once or twice in spring to spread growth and reduce weed pressure.
Contains: Campeda, Losa, Antas, and Denmark Subclovers
Did You Know? Subclovers are named for their unique habit of burying their seedheads underground, which helps them reliably reseed year after year.
Note to Certified Organic Growers: All our cover crop seed is untreated and non-GMO. Although this is conventional seed, it is coated with Nitro-Coat, a specialized coating made with rhizobacteria, naturally water-absorbing calcium carbonate to speed germination, and an organic adhesive.

Most of our property is shady, so finding clover that would grow was difficult. We planted this in a partially shady area and it sprouted right away. No problems so far!
I am really excited about this clover and am trying it out in different areas from raised beds to in the ground. Great germination so far.
I got tons of sprouts within a couple of days. Time will tell whether it's suited that hillside, but there is no question these are top quality seeds.
Planted it in a roughly tilled area with tall fescue. The clover fills in nicely between the clumps of fescue, holds up well in summer and winter.
