Vermiculite (3.5 Cu Ft Bag)
Improves Water Retention and Nutrient Exchange
Vermiculite is a naturally-occurring mineral that is also used in potting mixes. It is made from mica rock which is puffed under pressure and heat. Vermiculite is an excellent soil amendment because it helps to aerate the soil and improve drainage.
Additionally, vermiculite can help to hold moisture and nutrients in the soil, making it an ideal growing medium for plants. For these reasons, vermiculite is often used in potting mixes and seed-starting mixes.
Our medium grade vermiculite is a popular choice for many applications, as it is not too abrasive and can be easily worked with.
Organic Vermiculite: A Versatile Soil Amendment
Organic Vermiculite is a valuable soil amendment that has gained popularity among gardeners and horticulturists for its unique properties and numerous applications in agriculture. Derived from naturally occurring mineral deposits, vermiculite is known for its ability to improve soil structure, water retention, and aeration.
What is Organic Vermiculite?
Vermiculite is a naturally occurring mineral that expands when heated. The result is a lightweight, highly absorbent material with a spongy texture. Organic vermiculite, like the one available in a 3.5 cu. ft. bag, is processed without the use of chemicals, making it suitable for organic gardening practices.
Enhanced Water Retention
One of the primary advantages of using organic vermiculite in your garden or greenhouse is its exceptional water retention capabilities. Vermiculite can hold moisture within its structure, slowly releasing it to plant roots as needed. This property makes it an ideal choice for moisture-loving plants and helps maintain consistent soil moisture levels. Compared to traditional soil amendments, vermiculite's ability to prevent overwatering and underwatering can result in healthier, more resilient plants.
Improved Soil Aeration
In addition to its water retention properties, organic vermiculite also enhances soil aeration. When mixed into soil, vermiculite creates air pockets that allow for better root penetration and oxygen uptake by plant roots. This improved soil structure promotes healthier root development and helps prevent soil compaction, a common issue in heavy clay soils. Vermiculite's lightweight nature ensures that it doesn't add unnecessary bulk to your soil mixture, which can be a concern with some other amendments.
Nutrient Retention and Release
Organic vermiculite is an excellent medium for nutrient retention and gradual release. It can absorb and hold onto essential nutrients like potassium, magnesium, and calcium. As plants require these nutrients, vermiculite gradually releases them into the soil, ensuring a steady supply for optimal plant growth. This nutrient buffering capacity sets vermiculite apart from other soil amendments that may not offer such consistent nutrient availability.
Seed Starting and Propagation
For gardeners looking to start seeds or propagate plants, organic vermiculite is a valuable tool. Its fine, lightweight texture provides an ideal environment for seedlings and cuttings. Vermiculite's moisture-retentive properties create a stable and nurturing environment for young plants, giving them the best chance of successful germination and growth.
Comparing to Other Popular Soil Amendments
While organic vermiculite offers numerous benefits, it's essential to consider how it compares to other popular soil amendments like perlite and peat moss.
Perlite: Perlite is another lightweight soil amendment, but it primarily enhances soil aeration. Vermiculite, on the other hand, excels in both water retention and aeration, making it a more versatile choice for a wider range of plants and soil types.
Peat Moss: Peat moss is valued for its water retention and acidity-altering capabilities. However, it may have sustainability concerns due to its slow regeneration rate and potential environmental impact. Organic vermiculite provides similar water retention benefits without the environmental concerns associated with peat moss.
Organic vermiculite is a versatile and valuable addition to any gardener's toolkit. Its ability to enhance water retention, soil aeration, and nutrient availability makes it a preferred choice for various gardening applications. When compared to other popular soil amendments, vermiculite's balanced properties make it a standout option for both novice and experienced gardeners looking to improve their soil quality and promote healthier plant growth. Whether you're starting seeds, propagating plants, or simply seeking to improve your garden's soil structure, organic vermiculite is a reliable and sustainable choice.

I use this product for Wildflower seed broadcasting and my African violets. Wonderful value for a great product!
This is a great product for using to plant my tiny wildflower seeds. I am also using it to mix in my potting soil to really help with water retention.
We have ordered medium vermiculite many times but we just discovered today that you sent us the coarse grade. This is disappointing because we could get coarse grade in town. We pay the 14.00 plus in freight to get medium and have never had a problem until now. We did not notice when the box came but using today for planting did not get the results we do from medium.
