Chandler Strawberry Plants by the Box (1500)

Rich Palette of Flavors

Scientifically cultivated and highly esteemed, represents a horticultural gem sought by discerning gardeners. Characterized by its low stature, reaching 8 to 12 inches in height, and trifoliate, serrated dark green leaves, this perennial species bears distinctive, conical, or heart-shaped berries. These vibrant red strawberries, renowned for their delectable taste, emit an enticing aroma and strike a harmonious balance between sweetness and tartness, constituting an appealing choice for gastronomic pursuits.

Originating from the innovative breeding endeavors at the University of Massachusetts, the Chandler Strawberry Plant has garnered acclaim for its capacity to thrive in varying conditions. It flourishes best under full sun exposure but tolerates partial shade, favoring well-drained, slightly acidic soils enriched with organic matter. This plant's moderate resistance to common ailments, such as powdery mildew and verticillium wilt, underscores its hardy nature.

The process of harvesting Chandler strawberries is an exercise in precision. The berries attain peak ripeness when they assume a uniform, lustrous red hue. To gather them without detriment to the plant, one employs a gentle pinch, severing the stem just above the berry. This ensures an unblemished harvest and preserves the plant's vitality for future yield. A cultivar cherished by both amateur and professional cultivators, the Chandler Strawberry Plant stands as a testament to botanical excellence, offering a rich palette of flavors and fragrances to those who cultivate it with care and precision.

Strawberries are extremely adaptable and are grown in every state in the U.S. Plants generally grow 6-8" tall and 12" across, are shallow-rooted, and benefit from mulch such as straw, pine needles, or plastic. Prefer a soil rich in all the basic nutrients with a pH of 6 to 6.5. Susceptible to root rot and must be planted in well-drained soil, with crown set at soil level. Yield under the best of conditions is about one basket per plant per season.

June Bearers generally produce a single large crop in spring to early summer (as early as March in warmer regions) and are prolific producers for 3 to 4 weeks. Pick the blossoms off June bearers the first year to boost production the second year.

Everbearers are not as prolific as June bearers but are especially suitable for growers who wish to harvest a constant supply of berries throughout the summer. Plant some of both to have a large harvest to preserve, and plenty to eat all summer!
