Fort Laramie Strawberry Plants by the Box (1500)

Fort Laramie Strawberry Plants by the Box (1500)

Cold-Hardy Strawberry Beauty

(Fragaria x ananassa 'Fort Laramie') is a celebrated botanical specimen, known for its unique characteristics and versatility in cultivation. These strawberry plants exhibit a compact stature, typically reaching a height of 6-12 inches (15-30 cm) with a correspondingly modest spread. Their appearance is marked by lush, bushy growth, adorned with medium-green foliage, each leaf serrated and compound, comprising three leaflets.

Fort Laramie strawberries produce medium to large-sized fruits, recognized for their classic heart-shaped form. These strawberries exhibit a glossy, vibrant red hue when fully ripe, enticing both the eye and palate.

In terms of growing conditions, Fort Laramie Strawberries thrive under ample sunlight, although they can tolerate partial shade. For optimal results, they require a minimum of 6-8 hours of direct sunlight daily. Soil conditions should be well-draining and fertile, with a pH level ideally ranging from slightly acidic to neutral (around 6.0-6.5). Adequate soil preparation is crucial for robust growth and fruit development. Consistent moisture is essential, and regular, even watering ensures the maintenance of an appropriate soil moisture level, avoiding both drought stress and waterlogging.

Harvesting Fort Laramie Strawberries is a gratifying experience. Ripe strawberries should display a vivid red color, emit a sweet fragrance, and detach easily from the stem with a gentle pull. Proper harvesting techniques are imperative to preserve the fruit's quality and flavor.

The Fort Laramie Strawberry, with its distinctive attributes and culinary appeal, epitomizes the confluence of botanical finesse and aesthetic allure. Cultivating this remarkable specimen assures both visual gratification and gastronomic delight, catering to the preferences of seasoned horticulturists and neophyte gardeners alike.

Strawberries are extremely adaptable and are grown in every state in the U.S. Plants generally grow 6-8" tall and 12" across, are shallow-rooted, and benefit from mulch such as straw, pine needles, or plastic. Prefer a soil rich in all the basic nutrients with a pH of 6 to 6.5. Susceptible to root rot and must be planted in well-drained soil, with crown set at soil level. Yield under the best of conditions is about one basket per plant per season.

June Bearers generally produce a single large crop in spring to early summer (as early as March in warmer regions) and are prolific producers for 3 to 4 weeks. Pick the blossoms off June bearers the first year to boost production the second year.

Everbearers are not as prolific as June bearers but are especially suitable for growers who wish to harvest a constant supply of berries throughout the summer. Plant some of both to have a large harvest to preserve, and plenty to eat all summer!
