Bell Bean / Fava Bean (Vicia faba var. minor/equina), also known as Horse Bean or Tick Bean, is a vigorous, cool-season annual legume in the vetch family. Fast to establish and highly adaptable, it reaches 3–6 feet tall and fixes up to 150 lb/acre of nitrogen on fertile soils. Its fragrant black-and-white flowers bloom earlier than most winter legumes, supporting pollinators and beneficial insects. Ideal for erosion control, green manure, and pasture systems, it performs best when planted in early to mid-fall. Germinates in 5–10 days. Requires Pea Vetch or Garden Combo inoculant for optimal nitrogen fixation. Matures between March and May. Actually a member of the vetch family. Vigorous, adaptable legume.
