Description
Description
Organic Bell Beans are vigorous cool-season annual legumes used to build biomass and nitrogen before spring planting. Also known as Fava Beans, Horse Beans, or Tick Beans, these broad-leaved plants are members of the vetch family. They establish substantial roots and can reach 3–6 feet, creating an upright cover that protects soil and competes for growing space.
Bell Beans flower earlier than many winter annual legumes, producing fragrant black-and-white blossoms that attract bees and other beneficial insects. Their large plants generate nitrogen-rich green manure and are useful in cover-crop, erosion-control, and pasture systems. Nitrogen fixation depends on successful nodulation as well as soil fertility, moisture, stand density, and management; claims of a specific nitrogen contribution should be treated as a potential under favorable conditions rather than a guaranteed result.
Plant ½ inch deep in early to mid-fall and provide moisture through germination and establishment. For green manure, mow or incorporate before mature seed develops and allow the residue time to begin decomposing before the next crop. This is raw, uncoated legume seed and should be treated with a compatible inoculant before planting for reliable nodulation.
- Scientific Name: Vicia faba var. minor or equina
- Certification: Certified organic raw seed
- Growth Cycle: Cool-season annual legume
- Application Rate: Plant approximately ½ inch deep at 2–4 lb per 1,000 sq ft or 100–120 lb per acre
- Inoculant: Strongly recommended for effective nodulation and nitrogen fixation. Use Pea Vetch Lentil Inoculant (treats 100 lb), Garden Combination Mix Inoculant (treats 8 lb), or Garden Combination Mix Inoculant (treats 50 lb). Choose the package size that matches the amount of seed being planted and sow promptly after treatment.
- Germination: Approximately 5–10 days under suitable conditions
- Plant Height: Approximately 3–6 feet
- Uses: Nitrogen fixation, green manure, biomass production, erosion control, pasture, and beneficial-insect habitat
- Management: Terminate before mature seed develops unless volunteer plants are acceptable
