Mustard Seed (lb)
Loosens Compacted Soils
Common Mustard is a fast cool-season broadleaf for short planting windows when growers want roots, foliage, and flowers from a single species. Brassica plants establish quickly, send down substantial roots, and can reach approximately 4 feet. Their rapid growth helps occupy bare ground and produce green material for return to the soil.
Below ground, mustard roots create channels that can improve water movement and help capture nutrients. Above ground, the canopy competes with weeds and supplies biomass. If allowed to flower, mustard produces bright yellow blooms that attract bees and other beneficial insects. Because it is a brassica, consider the needs of the crop rotation before planting it ahead of or after vegetables in the same family.
Plant during cool spring or fall conditions in a prepared seedbed with establishment moisture. For green manure, mow or incorporate before mature seed develops; mustard can become a volunteer if allowed to set seed. Earlier termination creates softer residue, while later growth supplies more biomass. Common Mustard is not a legume and does not form nitrogen-fixing nodules, so Rhizobium inoculant is unnecessary.
- Scientific Group: Brassica species
- Growth Cycle: Fast-growing cool-season annual broadleaf
- Application Rate: 12–15 lb per acre or 0.5 lb per 1,000 sq ft
- Inoculant: Not required. This is a nonlegume cover crop and does not rely on Rhizobium bacteria for nitrogen fixation.
- Germination: Approximately 5–10 days under suitable conditions
- Plant Height: Up to approximately 4 feet
- Uses: Root-channel development, nutrient capture, green manure, biomass production, weed competition, improved water penetration, and beneficial-insect habitat
- Rotation Note: Consider disease and pest rotation when planting near other brassica crops
- Management: Terminate before mature seed develops unless volunteer mustard is acceptable

This is my go to spring cover crop, it does better than any other similar planting, such as rapeseed. Fast growing, lost of biomass, and bee absolutely go crazy over it. A large patch has the sweetest honey-like odor when in flower that you will smell all through the garden.
Zone 5B. Planted in 2 different areas in the spring, my herb garden and an area where I have grown lettuce prior. Research tells me this is a spring crop for my area. Grew to 2 inches then sent up a 3 inch flower stock. Planted in the fall mixed with other cover crops and see no evidence of it because the other crops outgrew it.
I used the Mustard Seed as a winter cover crop here in Western North Carolina.....clay soil...drought year...Western full sun. It grew beautifully and kept the sloping hill from eroding.
Very satisfied!
