Peaceful Valley Mustard Mix - Seed (lb)
Increase Water Penetration and Add Biomass
Description
Peaceful Valley Mustard Mix is a cool-season brassica blend selected for rapid biomass, flowering diversity, and aggressive root growth. Brassica juncea, Braco White Mustard, Nemfix Mustard, and canola combine upright foliage with thick roots that occupy soil quickly and help protect otherwise bare ground.
Mustard roots can create channels that improve water movement, while the canopy competes with weeds and produces plant material for green manure. If allowed to flower, the yellow blooms attract bees and other beneficial insects. These “hot mustard” selections also contain glucosinolates. When fresh plant tissue is finely chopped and immediately incorporated into moist soil, those compounds can break down into biologically active isothiocyanates.
Management determines whether the planting functions primarily as biomass, pollinator forage, or a biofumigant-style cover crop. For maximum glucosinolate activity, mow or chop the stand before or around early flowering, incorporate the material promptly, and water the soil immediately afterward. Results vary with variety, growth stage, chopping, soil moisture, temperature, and incorporation, so the mix should not be presented as guaranteed pest or nematode control. Prevent mature seed formation unless volunteer mustard is acceptable in the rotation. Mustards are nonlegume brassicas and need no Rhizobium inoculant.
- Season: Cool-season annual brassica mixture
- Contains: Brassica juncea Mustard, Braco White Mustard, Nemfix Mustard, and Canola (Brassica napus)
- Application Rate: 12–15 lb per acre or 0.5 lb per 1,000 sq ft
- Inoculant: Not required. This is a nonlegume cover crop and does not rely on Rhizobium bacteria for nitrogen fixation.
- Germination: Approximately 5–10 days under suitable conditions
- Plant Height: Approximately 3–4 feet
- Uses: Green manure, biomass production, root-channel development, water-infiltration improvement, weed competition, and beneficial-insect habitat
- Biofumigation Management: Finely chop, incorporate promptly, and water immediately; results are condition-dependent and not guaranteed
- Termination: Prevent mature seed formation when volunteer brassicas are not desired

I bought it years ago and planted this year. It germinate fast despite of about 2 years kept inside basement. It's beautiful now after six weeks. This is the first using cover crop. I will follow up the review next year.
Packaged well and arrived on time. Seed looks great and price/# is very fair. Along with other PVF cover crop mixes, this mustard mix will be the first succession to nursing my heavy clay soil back to health as food forest becomes established! Thank you!
So far I've only had the seed in my raised beds for a week and a half. The seed germinated really fast and I'm looking forward to seeing how it does.
Order arrived quickly and already germinated and starting to cover my field, will definitely purchase again.
With raised bed soil temps in the mid 50\'s, I got germination in less than a week. I only watered at planting and it has been dry and sunny for 5 days. The seed appears to emerged at near 100% of the density it was broadcast (and raked over) at
