Organic Dwarf Essex Rapeseed

Hardworking, cheerful, and surprisingly beautiful, Brassica napus ‘Dwarf Essex’ is a certified organic cover crop that earns its place in every garden and small farm. Come late summer and fall, its lush, leafy canopy carpets bare soil in rich green, protecting the earth from heavy rains and crowding out weeds with quiet efficiency. And when allowed to bloom in spring, it erupts in a haze of bright golden-yellow flowers that hum with bees and beneficial insects — a lovely, purposeful display before it’s tilled back into the soil to feed the next season’s crops. 

‘Dwarf Essex’ grows 18 to 36 inches tall and fits beautifully into home gardens, raised beds, orchards, vineyards, and small farm rotations. Broadcast it across fallow beds in late summer or early fall to protect and enrich soil over winter, then mow or till it in a few weeks before spring planting.

It's a brassica (Brassica napus), not a legume, so it has no nitrogen-fixing capability and there's no inoculant for it. It pairs naturally with other cover crop companions like crimson clover, hairy vetch, and field peas — a multi-species mix that builds even richer soil biology and adds nitrogen alongside the rapeseed’s impressive biomass contribution.

Plant ‘Dwarf Essex’ in full sun in any reasonably well-drained soil with a pH of 5.5–7.0. Broadcast 4-7 lbs/acre at ¼” to ½” deep. Drill or increase rate to broadcast seed and lightly rake in; it germinates in just 5–10 days in cool soil. No fussing required — this crop establishes fast, grows through cold weather, and does its best work quietly underfoot.
