Organic Yellow Mustard

Fast-growing organic biofumigant cover crop that smothers weeds and suppresses soil pests

Bold, fast, and fiercely effective, Sinapis alba Yellow Mustard is a certified organic cover crop that gets to work the moment it hits the soil. One of the fastest-establishing brassicas available, it surges upward in cool and warm weather alike, blanketing bare ground with dense, leafy growth that smothers weeds before they have a chance to compete. When it blooms, its cheerful yellow flowers light up the field — a brief, beautiful signal that it’s time to terminate and let its powerful biofumigant chemistry go to work in the soil below.

Yellow Mustard grows 24 to 48 inches tall and thrives in home gardens, market gardens, orchards, vineyards, and farm fields wherever a fast, short-window cover crop is needed. It’s an excellent choice for frost-seeding before soybeans or flying on in late summer and early fall to protect soil through the shoulder season. Unlike many cover crops, Yellow Mustard performs best seeded alone — its aggressive growth habit makes it a natural smother crop that doesn’t need companions to do its job.

It has no nitrogen-fixing symbiosis and there's no inoculant to apply. Best to pair it in rotation with nitrogen-fixing covers like crimson clover or hairy vetch to build a complete soil health program across seasons.

Plant Yellow Mustard in full sun in well-drained soil with a pH of 6.0–7.5. Drill or broadcast 5–10 lbs./acre at ½–¾ inch deep; it germinates in just 4–7 days across a wide range of soil temperatures. The key to success is timely termination — mow or till at first flower, before seed set, and incorporate immediately into moist soil to unlock its biofumigant benefits. Certified organic, fast-acting, and remarkably versatile, Yellow Mustard is a powerhouse for any grower looking to clean up problem ground quickly. Organic Yellow Mustard – Sinapis alba

Application Rate: 5–10 lb/acre drilled or broadcast
