Muir Peach Tree

Muir Peach Tree

The heirloom peach for purity

The Muir peach is a cherished heirloom variety, valued for its intensely sweet, low-acid flavor and its smooth, vibrant yellow flesh. This freestone peach is highly versatile, excelling in fresh consumption, dehydration, and preserving. With golden skin and minimal blush, the Muir peach stands out for its understated beauty and purity of taste. This cultivar has a rich history, originally popularized for its adaptability and flavor, making it a favorite among organic gardeners and those who appreciate historical fruit varieties. Discovered on John Muir's property, the Muir peach was once thought to be a seedling of the Indian Blood peach, further contributing to its unique heritage. Self-fruitful and requiring moderate chill hours, the Muir peach thrives in sunny, well-draining locations, making it suitable for a wide range of climates. Its reliable yields and natural sweetness make it a standout choice for gardeners seeking a flavorful and unique addition to their orchards. Whether you enjoy its fresh flavor straight from the tree or in dried slices, the Muir peach is a variety that delivers taste and heritage in every bite.

Why Choose the Muir Peach Tree?

The Muir peach tree is a standout choice for your orchard, prized for its natural resistance to peach leaf curl and its exceptional, sweet peaches. Developed on John Muir's property, this heirloom variety thrives in full sun and dry weather, offering a productive harvest with minimal care. With its self-fruitful nature and resistance to common peach tree diseases like brown rot, the Muir peach is an ideal selection for organic gardeners looking for a reliable, high-quality fruit tree that performs well in zones 5-9.

Muir Peach Tree Care & Growing Tips

  • Soil and Planting Requirements:The Muir peach tree thrives in well-draining, slightly acidic to neutral soil. Plant in a location with full sun exposure, ensuring at least 6-8 hours of sunlight each day. It grows best in zones 5-9, where the climate is warm and dry, and is resistant to peach leaf curl, making it ideal for areas with this common problem.
  • Watering:Regular watering is essential, especially during dry weather. Ensure the soil stays moist but not waterlogged. Deep watering is recommended to encourage deep root growth. Avoid wetting the foliage to reduce the risk of brown rot and other fungal diseases.
  • Pruning: Regular pruning is necessary to maintain a healthy and productive Muir peach tree. Prune to remove any dead or diseased wood and to open up the canopy for better airflow. Regular pruning also helps to control the spread and shape of the tree. Keep an eye on peach leaf curl symptoms and prune as needed to control its spread.
  • Fertilization: Fertilize the Muir peach tree with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer during the growing season to promote healthy growth and fruit production. Avoid excessive nitrogen, which can lead to vigorous foliage growth at the expense of fruit.
  • Chill Hours and Temperature Needs: Muir peach trees require 500-800 chill hours, which is the number of hours below 45°F needed to break dormancy. Plant in areas with mild winters, ensuring that frost is not a common issue during the winter months. The tree will bloom late in the season and requires a warm climate for optimal fruit production.

Muir Peach Tree Pollination and Companion Trees

The Muir peach tree is self-fruitful, meaning it does not require a pollination partner to produce fruit, making it an excellent choice for home gardeners with limited space. However, planting it alongside other resistant varieties like Indian Free or Frost peach trees can help enhance cross-pollination, improving yields and fruit quality. For optimal fruit production and peach leaf curl control, choose companion trees that are resistant to diseases such as brown rot and ensure they thrive in full sun with regular pruning to maintain healthy, productive trees. Consider planting in areas with dry weather and warm temperatures, especially in zones 5-9 where the Muir peach’s adaptability and resistance to peach leaf curl are most beneficial.

About Peaches: Peaches are extremely vigorous trees requiring regular pruning and thinning. Needs fertile, well drained soils. Tend to bloom early and may be difficult to crop in late frost areas. Plant several varieties for continued supply, as ripe fruit does not store well. Susceptible to peach leaf curl, brown rot, oriental fruit moth and peach twig borer. Guarantee

Limited Dormant Tree & Plant Guarantee

* Claim deadline is June 15th

We guarantee that your dormant tree or plant will arrive in good, viable condition. If your tree arrives in substandard condition, notify us within 3 days of delivery. Please email pictures of the box, inside packaging, the tree and its roots to helpdesk@groworganic.com.  We will investigate your claim and process a request to exchange or refund the damaged product.

If your dormant tree or plant has not grown new leaves by June 15th, you may be eligible for our Limited Dormant Tree & Plant Guarantee. This guarantee provides for a store credit for the purchase price of the tree, excluding shipping. Please see the Instructions below.

Important Dates:

  • April 1st Dormant trees/plants must be planted in the ground
  • May 15th Perform scratch test, if no new leaves have grown
  • June 15th Deadline to apply for a dormant tree/plant credit

All required documentation must be received by June 15th for your claim to be considered. Claims or documentation received after June 15th will be denied, without exception. Instructions listed below

Terms and Conditions

We cannot guarantee that your tree or plant will remain alive and healthy after it is received, or bear fruit as there are too many variables in your environment that are beyond our control (i.e. soil preparation, weed and pest control, proper irrigation, chill hours, compatible hardiness for your growing zone, proper choice of pollinator, extreme weather, rodent damage, disease, etc.).

We cannot guarantee that we will be able to provide a replacement tree/plant of the same species either that same growing season or in future years. Customers are responsible for all shipping fees associated with replacement trees and plants.

If we determine that the tree you purchased directly from us is not viable, we will issue you a store credit (not a refund) for the purchase price of the affected dormant tree or plant. Shipping is not included in the dormant tree/plant guarantee. Store credits can be used to purchase any product we sell and are valid for use only until July 1st of the following year.

Historically, 98% of our dormant trees and plants grow and thrive when they have been cared for and planted using our growing guides. Dormant trees and plants must be planted in the ground by April 1st in order to be eligible for credit. If the ground in your area is still frozen solid, you may temporarily plant your tree or plant in a pot.

Potted, non-dormant trees or plants are excluded from this guarantee as they are not dormant at the time of shipment. Evergreen trees such as citrus, avocado and olive trees are not available for credit under the Dormant Tree and Plant Guarantee.

Instructions

We guarantee that your dormant fruit tree or plant will leaf out, if you care for it according to our growing guides. In the unlikely event that your dormant tree or plant does not have leaves by May 15th, follow these simple steps to apply for a store credit:

Before you call or email, please perform a “scratch test” to determine if the tree or plant is still alive. This video shows how to check for live tissue under the bark. Scratch tests need to be done a few inches above and below the graft.

Green Cambium Layer / Living Trees

If the cambium layer under the bark is green, give your tree a little more time. It is still alive, but hasn’t come out of dormancy yet. Check to make sure that it is getting the right amount of deep root water, enough sunlight and that the weather is warm enough for that type of tree/plant to come out of dormancy. Every tree has its own personality and will come out of dormancy at different times. Be sure to submit the required documentation listed below by June 15th, if it doesn’t grow leaves.

Brown Cambium Layer / Dead Trees

If the scratch test shows a brown cambium layer or if your dormant tree/plant doesn’t have leaves by June 1st, please email us at helpdesk@groworganic.com. All required documentation listed below must be received by June 15th for your claim to be considered. To be considered for the guarantee claim, all required documentation must be received by June 15th.  Incomplete submissions will be denied.

Required Documentation

  1. Order number
  2. Name of dormant tree/plant and the quantity affected
  3. Photos of each tree or plant showing:
    1. The roots (tree or plant must be pulled out of the ground)
    2. The scratch test areas
    3. The entire tree/plant

We reserve the right to not issue credit for items that have already been replaced. We also reserve the right to require photographic evidence that the tree/plant was not killed by root rot, rodent or mechanical damage.

It started out a stick.

It was a straight stick, no little branches at first. I was a little surprised it was sent at all and the goofy leaves on the stick looked crazy. But it's looking good now. Has the start of nice branches and a good shape. I had to watch it when it got hot but it's doing great now. Moral of the story: don't judge a tree by it's stick beginning? Ha

Wonderful

Both trees leafed out one was a bit stubborn and leafed out a month after the first. But that was for the best as I had a very rare late frost after may and the stubborn one is now doing better then the early bird
