Peaceful Valley Budget Soil Builder Mix - Raw Seed (lb)

Fix Nitrogen and Stay in Budget

Peaceful Valley Budget Soil Builder Mix offers a straightforward way to combine nitrogen-producing legumes with the dependable biomass of oats at a lower seed cost. Bell beans, field peas, and common vetch contribute nitrogen-rich growth, while white oats establish quickly, protect the soil surface, and support the climbing legumes as the stand develops.

This mix is intended for general cool-season soil improvement rather than maximum biomass production. It still provides meaningful weed competition, green manure, and organic matter, but produces somewhat less total growth than the full Peaceful Valley Soil Builder Mix. The range of seed sizes and plant forms creates both fine cereal roots and larger legume roots, helping occupy more of the soil profile than a single-species planting.

Seed in September or October in most locations. Spring planting is also possible in coastal regions and other areas with cool summers. This is raw seed, so inoculate the legumes before planting to support effective nodulation and nitrogen fixation. Mow or incorporate before mature seed develops and while the stems remain manageable. When the mixture is allowed to produce heavy late-season growth, give incorporated residue time to begin decomposing before planting the next crop.

  • Season: Cool-season annual legume and cereal mixture
  • Contains: Bell Beans, Field Peas, Common Vetch, and White Oats
  • Application Rate: 3–5 lb per 1,000 sq ft or 70–120 lb per acre
  • Inoculant: Strongly recommended for effective nodulation and nitrogen fixation. Use Pea Vetch Lentil Inoculant (treats 100 lb), Garden Combination Mix Inoculant (treats 8 lb), or Garden Combination Mix Inoculant (treats 50 lb). Choose the package size that matches the amount of seed being planted, and plant promptly after treating the seed.
  • Germination: Approximately 5–10 days under suitable conditions
  • Plant Height: Approximately 4–6 feet
  • Uses: Green manure, nitrogen fixation, weed competition, organic matter production, and beneficial-insect habitat
  • Planting Window: September or October in most areas; spring planting in coastal or cool-summer regions
  • Management: Terminate before mature seed develops and allow heavy incorporated residue time to decompose
