Nitrogen Fertilizer: Sources, Deficiency Signs & Safe Use

Nitrogen is essential for chlorophyll, proteins, and new vegetative growth. It is also the fertilizer nutrient most likely to be lost from the root zone or overapplied. A useful nitrogen plan begins with the crop, soil conditions, previous amendments, and the current product label—not leaf color alone.

What Nitrogen Does for Plants

Plants need nitrogen to build leaves, stems, enzymes, and chlorophyll. Demand is often highest during active vegetative growth, but the correct rate varies widely. Legumes may obtain part of their nitrogen through biological fixation when the appropriate bacteria and growing conditions are present, while leafy crops and fast-growing annuals often require more available nitrogen.

On an NPK label, nitrogen is the first number and is expressed as a percentage by weight. A 5-3-3 fertilizer contains 5% total nitrogen, but the release pattern depends on the ingredient, temperature, moisture, and soil biology.

Possible Deficiency and Excess

Older leaves that become uniformly pale or yellow, weak growth, and reduced vigor can be associated with nitrogen deficiency because plants can move nitrogen from older tissue to new growth. These symptoms are not diagnostic. Saturated soil, damaged roots, cool temperatures, disease, and other nutrient problems may look similar.

Excess nitrogen can produce overly soft vegetative growth, delayed flowering or maturity, greater water demand, salt injury, or nutrient imbalance. If growth is already vigorous, do not add nitrogen simply because the calendar says it is time to feed.

Estimate Need Before Applying

  1. Identify the crop, growth stage, and expected nitrogen demand.
  2. Review recent soil information, prior manure or compost use, and nitrogen supplied by previous fertilizer.
  3. Check irrigation and drainage; nitrate can move below the root zone with excess water.
  4. Use the fertilizer analysis and labeled rate to calculate how much nitrogen the application supplies.
  5. Record the product, amount, area, and date before making another application.

Application Timing and Placement

For annual beds, part of the nitrogen may be incorporated before planting and the remainder side-dressed during active growth when the product label allows. Splitting applications can align nutrient supply with crop demand and reduce the amount exposed to loss at one time. For containers, use a product labeled for container crops and account for frequent irrigation.

Keep concentrated fertilizer away from seeds, stems, and tree trunks unless the label directs otherwise. Avoid applying before heavy rain, to saturated soil, or where material can move into drains or surface water.

Nitrogen Decisions by Crop Type

  • Leafy vegetables: Nitrogen supports leaf production, but excessive rates can still create weak growth or unnecessary salt accumulation.
  • Fruiting vegetables: Balance early vegetative growth with flowering and fruiting; do not respond to low fruit set with nitrogen unless a deficiency is supported.
  • Root and bulb crops: Excess late nitrogen may favor tops rather than the intended harvest.
