Rooting hormone can improve rooting speed or consistency for some cuttings, but it is not required for every plant and cannot correct poor cutting material, wrong timing, saturated media, or weak aftercare. Choose the formulation and concentration from the product label and crop guidance. Apply it hygienically to the prepared base, then insert the cutting without wiping the product away.

What rooting hormones do
Commercial products commonly supply an auxin-type active ingredient in powder, liquid, gel, or soluble concentrate. The active ingredient and strength differ. Higher concentration is not automatically better: excess can damage tissue or inhibit rooting. Use the product intended for the cutting type and follow its label.
Prepare the cutting first
Select healthy, correctly identified stock. Take cuttings at the species-appropriate stage with a clean sharp tool. Keep them cool and moist, make the basal cut as directed, remove leaves that would be buried, and prepare the propagation medium before treatment. Review the full Propagation by Cuttings guide.
Apply powder hygienically
- Pour a small working amount into a separate clean cup.
- Lightly moisten the cutting base only if the label directs it.
- Dip to the labeled depth and tap off excess without contaminating the container.
- Make a pilot hole in the medium so insertion does not scrape off the powder.
- Discard the working portion; never return it to the original jar.
Apply liquid or gel
For ready-to-use liquids or gels, decant a small portion and use the labeled dip depth and time. Concentrates must be diluted exactly as directed with the specified water and equipment. Do not reuse working solution or combine products unless the label permits it.
Media and aftercare still determine success
The medium should hold the cutting upright, retain moisture, and preserve air around the base. Perlite, coir, vermiculite, peat, pumice, and blends behave differently; see the Growing Media guide. After insertion, supply species-appropriate humidity, light, and temperature without waterlogging or overheating.
Do not pull cuttings repeatedly to check roots. Look for stable new growth and gentle resistance, then inspect a sample when the expected rooting period has passed. Acclimate rooted plants gradually to lower humidity and stronger light.
Wounding and heel cuttings
Some woody cuttings use a shallow basal wound or a heel of older wood to expose responsive tissue. These are specialized methods and can increase decay when used inappropriately. Read Wounding vs. Heel Cutting before adding the step.
Handling and label controls
- Wear the protective equipment on the label.
- Avoid breathing powder or contacting eyes and skin.
- Keep products away from food, children, pets, and water sources.
- Use clean measuring and working containers reserved for horticulture.
- Store in the original closed container within labeled temperature limits.
- Follow the label for disposal and allowed crops or uses.
