Heeling in is temporary storage for a dormant bare root tree when the permanent planting site is not ready. The goal is simple: keep roots cool, moist, covered, and protected without encouraging early growth.
Inspect the tree first
Open the package promptly. Check the roots, trunk, branches, and graft union, and photograph any significant shipping concern. Do not leave roots exposed to sun or wind.
Heel in outdoors
- Choose a shaded, well-drained place where water will not collect.
- Dig a shallow trench long enough to hold the root system without sharply bending roots.
- Lay the tree at an angle and cover every root with loose soil.
- Water the soil enough to settle it around the roots.
- Check moisture regularly; keep it moist, not saturated.
If the ground is frozen
Place the roots in a container of damp packing material or loose soil in a cool, unheated, protected location. Keep the tree dormant and away from heaters, direct sun, rodents, and standing water. Never allow the roots to dry.
Plant as soon as conditions allow
