Place seedlings under usable light as soon as they emerge, cover the full tray evenly, and adjust height from the fixture instructions and plant response. There is no universal hanging height: fluorescent bars, LED strips, panels, and high-output fixtures differ in intensity, beam spread, and heat. Distance, daily duration, and coverage work together.

Coverage matters before wattage
Start with the actual tray dimensions and the manufacturer’s recommended vegetative coverage. A fixture can be bright at the center while leaving corners weak. Arrange bars or panels so adjacent footprints overlap without creating a severe hot spot. White or reflective nearby surfaces can reduce side losses but do not replace direct overhead coverage.
Set the initial height
Use the fixture’s seedling or vegetative spacing recommendation. Measure from the light-emitting surface to the top of the canopy, not the bench. Raise the fixture as plants grow or lower the tray platform in small steps. Avoid letting leaves touch lamps, housings, or hot components.
Fixture output may be dimmable. A wider dimmed panel can sometimes cover a tray more evenly than a concentrated light hung very high, but confirm the manufacturer’s instructions and observe the crop.
Daily timing
Use a timer for a consistent light and dark cycle. Many seedlings are grown with a long day, but they still need a dark period; continuous light is not the default. Crop, fixture intensity, temperature, and natural daylight influence the useful schedule. Begin with the fixture and crop guidance, then adjust from plant response.
Light begins at emergence
Most seeds do not need strong light before germination, though some species require light or darkness as part of germination. Once shoots emerge, delay produces stretching that cannot be fully reversed. Check covered trays daily and move or uncover emerged seedlings promptly.
Manage heat separately
Grow lights and heat mats solve different problems. A heat mat warms the root zone during germination; the light supports photosynthesis after emergence. Measure temperature at canopy or root-zone level rather than assuming LEDs produce no heat. Vent enclosed shelves and keep water away from electrical connections.
Use seedling response as the final test
- Compact stems and leaves held normally suggest usable light.
- Stretching, leaning, and large gaps between leaves suggest insufficient light or excessive warmth.
- Bleaching, upward-curling leaves, or a hot canopy can indicate excessive intensity or heat.
- Uneven tray growth points to coverage, watering, temperature, or cell-size differences.
Change one variable at a time and watch new growth. Fertilizer does not correct inadequate light, and brighter light does not correct saturated roots.
Safety and setup
Use fixtures and timers rated for the environment. Provide drip loops, keep connections off wet surfaces, secure hangers, and follow electrical load limits. Do not suspend a fixture from an improvised support that can fail over a watered tray.
