Decide which production path is open
- Harvest an established crop when it is healthy, accessible, and producing usable growth.

- Use protection only when the crop, forecast, structure, anchoring, ventilation, and daily management fit.
- Propagate indoors when a later transplant window and suitable light, temperature, sanitation, and hardening plan exist.
- Rest the bed when soil is saturated or frozen, establishment is unrealistic, or protection would create more risk than value.
Check daylength and actual light at the crop, not just outdoor air temperature. Measure protected-space temperature at crop height and observe root-zone moisture. Inspect the growth point, undersides of leaves, crowns, and the soil surface for active pests or disease. A crop that is alive is not necessarily growing enough to justify more water or fertilizer.

Crop labels such as “cold hardy” or “short season” still require cultivar-specific interpretation. Maturity figures are estimates under stated or favorable conditions, not guarantees in low winter light. Review the seed packet or supplier information, then adjust for emergence temperature, daylength, protection, transplant stress, and the expected harvest window.
Evaluate crop groups without turning them into a calendar
Leafy greens: An established hardy green may be the most realistic west-side winter producer, especially in a bright, well-drained, sheltered bed. Yet low light can slow replacement growth, and dense wet foliage can increase disease risk. Harvest conservatively, maintain airflow, and distinguish survival from useful regrowth. In colder eastern and high-elevation sites, the same crop may need substantial protection or may simply hold beneath snow.
Brassicas: Crop, cultivar, maturity, and exposure determine tolerance. Inspect growing points after cold events and look for current slug, aphid, or disease evidence before deciding to hold or remove a plant. Do not apply a statewide claim that cold will improve quality or that a cover will prevent injury.
Roots and alliums: Established roots or alliums may remain in place where drainage and cultivar fit are acceptable, but saturated soil, freeze-thaw, rodents, and access can make in-ground storage risky. Check individual crops and site conditions. Do not disturb wet or frozen soil for routine inspection.
Legumes: Overwintering ability and inoculation needs depend on the species, cultivar, soil, and intended use. A legume chosen as food or cover still needs a rotation and termination plan. Avoid assuming nitrogen benefit without compatible rhizobia, successful growth, and appropriate management.
Indoor starts: Prioritize crops whose future outdoor or protected window is credible. Warm-season crops started too early can outgrow available light and space long before Washington soil and night conditions are appropriate. Keep a winter production record
For each succession, record cultivar, sowing or transplant condition, protected-space minimum and maximum observations, light location, root-zone moisture, harvest, and pest or disease notes. Photograph the same plants after weather changes. These records reveal whether the limit was temperature, light, water, cultivar, timing, or management and make the next winter plan more local.

Harvest mature leaves or roots selectively while tissues are sound and accessible. Avoid damaging frozen foliage or compacting wet soil to reach a small harvest. Remove confirmed diseased or decaying material according to the diagnosis, but do not strip every clean stem and refuge from the garden. Record whether injury follows a freeze, a saturated patch, a protected-space edge, or current feeding.
Water only after checking the root zone. West-side beds may need no irrigation during wet periods, while protected beds, containers, rain-shadow sites, and eastern gardens can dry. Apply water when the soil can receive it and the system can operate without creating hazardous ice or freeze damage. Frequency varies with soil, crop stage, cover, wind, and weather.
Do not use fertilizer to force a crop limited by light, cold soil, disease, or damaged roots. Base fertility on a soil test, crop need, label, and site conditions. Excess available nitrogen can produce soft growth without correcting the underlying winter limit.
Use season extension as a managed environment
Row cover or a tunnel can change temperature, wind, and pest exposure, but it cannot guarantee frost protection. Select material and supports for the crop and expected weather, follow the instructions, anchor it, and keep it from abrading plants. Monitor temperature and humidity inside the structure. Ventilate when heat or condensation builds and close only when the forecast and crop justify it.
In the Olympic Peninsula and exposed coast, wind anchoring may control the decision. Around Puget Sound, low light and humidity can make ventilation more important than adding another layer. At elevation, snow load and access may rule out a light structure. In the Columbia Basin, wind and water access can limit both protected and outdoor crops.
Repeated plastic use carries material and disposal costs. Extend service life through correct storage and repair where safe, and plan end-of-life handling. A protected bed is not automatically regenerative if it requires repeated replacement, excess irrigation, or avoidable inputs.
Start indoors only for a real transplant window
Work backward from a condition, not a fixed calendar. Identify the crop’s expected transplant size, the soil temperature and workability it needs, the forecast tolerance, and the protected or outdoor space it will enter. Then check whether indoor light and temperature can produce sturdy plants without holding them too long.

Delay sowing when the future bed is likely to remain saturated or frozen beyond the plant’s useful indoor window. Advancing an indoor sowing can simply move the bottleneck into crowded trays. A smaller, well-timed succession may be more resilient than one large batch.
Use rotation and root occupancy deliberately
Keep the crop-family map visible even when winter production is sparse. An overwintered brassica, allium, legume, or cover crop affects the next rotation. Maintain living roots where water, oxygen, and temperature permit, but do not force a late stand into an unsuitable bed. Use legume inoculant only where applicable to the legume and product instructions.
Succession planting is condition-based in winter. Open the next sowing only when the previous crop, light, soil temperature, root-zone state, and protected-space capacity support it. Longer root occupancy and a more diverse rotation are intended outcomes, not guaranteed results; weather and site limits can override the plan.
Diagnose biological pressure before acting
In mild wet western beds, look for fresh slug feeding, slime trails, aphids, and foliar disease. In protected spaces, inspect for condensation, crowding, mites or aphids, and weak growth. In eastern and storage areas, watch for rodent access and stored-crop damage. Separate active damage from freeze injury, waterlogging, nutrient symptoms, and old scars.
