Plant Propagation by Cuttings: A Step-by-Step Guide

Propagation by cuttings starts a new plant from a stem, leaf, or root section. Many plants can be reproduced this way, but the right cutting type, season, and environment vary by species and cultivar. A cutting is usually genetically similar to its parent; it can also carry the parent's pests, diseases, or mutations.

Before Taking a Cutting

  • Confirm that the plant and cultivar can be propagated by the cutting type you plan to use.
  • Choose a healthy, well-hydrated stock plant without obvious insects, spots, cankers, or wilt.
  • Check whether a plant patent or propagation restriction applies before reproducing material for sale or distribution.
  • Prepare the container and medium first so the cutting is not left drying on a bench.

Common Types of Cuttings

  • Herbaceous and softwood: Tender, actively growing stems that often root quickly but lose water rapidly.
  • Semi-hardwood: Partly matured current-season growth used for many shrubs and woody ornamentals.
  • Hardwood: Mature or dormant stems that usually root more slowly and follow species-specific timing.
  • Leaf or leaf-bud: Used only for plants able to form shoots and roots from the selected leaf tissue.
  • Root: Sections of healthy root used for species that can produce new shoots from root tissue.

Do not assume a method that works for one plant will work for another. Species-specific extension or nursery guidance should determine timing, cutting length, node placement, and whether wounding or bottom heat is appropriate.

Step-by-Step Stem Cutting Method

  1. Clean the work area. Wash containers and sanitize cutting tools with a method suitable for the tool and plant material. Use a fresh, well-drained propagation medium.
  2. Take the cutting. Cut a healthy shoot at the length recommended for the species. Keep track of the top and bottom of dormant material.
  3. Prepare the stem. Remove foliage that would sit below the medium. Retain enough upper leaf area for photosynthesis, but reduce very large leaves if species guidance recommends it. Remove flowers and fruit.
  4. Use rooting hormone only when appropriate. Choose a product and concentration labeled for the plant and cutting type. Pour a small working amount into a separate container; do not return used material to the original package.
  5. Insert the cutting. Make a pilot hole when needed so the medium does not scrape off treatment. Firm the mix gently around the stem and label the plant, cultivar, and date.
  6. Manage moisture and humidity. Water the medium, allow drainage, and keep it evenly moist rather than saturated. A dome or tent can slow water loss, but it also reduces airflow and can favor disease.
  7. Provide suitable light and temperature. Use bright indirect light for most unrooted cuttings. Direct sun under a humidity cover can overheat tissue. Bottom heat helps selected species but can also dry the medium faster.
  8. Check for roots without pulling repeatedly. New growth is not proof of rooting. Look for roots at drainage openings or test one cutting after the expected rooting period.

After Roots Form

Begin opening the humidity cover gradually so the cutting adjusts to lower humidity. Transplant when roots hold the medium together but before they circle densely. Use a pot only slightly larger than the rooted plug, water it in, and keep light and fertility gentle during the transition.

Troubleshooting

  • Cutting wilts quickly: Leaf area may be too large, humidity too low, or the stem damaged.
  • Base turns dark or soft: The medium may be too wet, sanitation poor, or temperature unsuitable.
  • Callus forms without roots: The cutting may need more time, different hormone treatment, or a different season.
  • New leaves collapse after potting: Acclimation may have been too fast or the root system too small.
